Olympic Swimmer Makes History in Tokyo, Gives Glory to God

Tatjana Schoemaker made Olympic Games history after setting the new record for women’s 200-meter breaststroke in Tokyo.
Despite the momentous occasion, the swimmer from South Africa gave all glory to God.
Beneath her green swimming cap, Schoemaker wore a white cap with the words “Soli Deo Gloria,” which means “Glory to God alone,” printed on the side. It also featured a blue Jesus fish.

The South African swimmer set a new Olympic record in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke during the preliminary round on Wednesday, with a time of 2:19.16. The event’s semifinals happen on Thursday evening.

Schoenmaker had already broken one Olympic record in Tokyo, in the 100-meter breaststroke preliminary rounds with a time of 1:04.82. She ended up claiming silver in the 100-meter event on Monday.
The 24-year-old entered Tokyo as one of the favourites in both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events. Schoenmaker’s silver in the 2020 Olympics was the first medal in women’s swimming for South Africa since 2000.
At the start of the Tokyo Olympics, Schoemaker shared her thankfulness for the opportunity to swim for her country and her desire to honor God.
