Britney Spears’ Father Petitions to End Conservatorship: ‘This Filing Represents a Massive Legal Victory’

By Movieguide® Staff

After thirteen years in her conservatorship under her father, Britney Spears expressed her desire to end the court-ordered therapy.

In what Spears’ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, called a “massive legal victory,” the pop artist’s father, Jamie Spears, recently petitioned to end the conservatorship.

Rosengart, who has represented the singer in court since July, said that despite Jamie’s petition, he would conduct further investigations to uncover whether or not Britney’s finances were mishandled.

“This filing represents a massive legal victory for Britney Spears, as well as vindication,” Rosengart told Fox News. “Having exposed his misconduct and improper plan to hold his daughter hostage by trying to extract a multi-million-dollar settlement, Mr. Spears has now effectively surrendered. There is no settlement.”

“To the extent Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, he is incorrect and our investigation into financial mismanagement and other issues will continue,” the statement continued.

The petition has yet to be approved in court, but Jamie assured that it was always his plan to step down as his daughter’s conservator.

“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” Jamie’s petition reads according to AP. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

Movieguide® previously reported that Britney said that she has started to rely on God:

Spears, 39, started the conservatorship in 2008 after a mental breakdown. But the singer said she is done with the intense therapy sessions and wants to instead rely on God.

Since her mental collapse, Spears has recovered to release four new albums, had world tours, and was a judge on the show X-FACTOR. However, her father, James “Jamie” Spears, still has control over her estimated $60 million fortune.

Despite her silence on the subject in the past, Spears recently made a public statement in court against the legal mandate that controls her life.

“I want my life back!” Spears told a Los Angeles Superior Court judge.

“I want changes going forward. I deserve changes. I was told I have to sit down and be evaluated, again, if I want to end the conservatorship,” Spears said. “Ma’am, I didn’t know I could [contest] the conservatorship. I’m sorry for my ignorance, but I honestly didn’t know that. But honestly, I don’t think I owe anyone to be evaluated.”

Spears said that her former therapist, Dr. Benson, abused her with his treatment. Dr. Benson died in 2019.

“[Dr. Benson] illegally … 100% abused me by the treatment he gave me. And to be totally honest with you, when he passed away, I got on my knees and thanked God.

“I don’t feel like I can live a full life,” she added. “I don’t owe them to go see a man I don’t know and share [with] him my problems. I don’t even believe in therapy. I always think you take it to God. I want to end the conservatorship without being evaluated.”
