Don’t Miss A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING, Returning to TV

By Movieguide® Staff

Last year, fans feared that the beloved Peanuts holiday specials would no longer appear on broadcast television due to AppleTV obtaining rights to the classics.

However, A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING will air ad-free on PBS and PBS Kids stations on Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The 1973 Thanksgiving holiday special followed last month’s broadcast of the 1966 movie, IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN. In December, PBS will air the 1965 movie, A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS.

“We are delighted to bring the joy of these holiday classics to families across the country, in partnership with our member stations,” PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger said. “During these challenging times, public television continues to be a free and easily accessible source of comfort, inspiration and education for millions of Americans.”

The three holiday specials will also stream on AppleTV.

A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING first aired on CBS in 1973. From 2001 to 2019, ABC hosted the beloved Peanuts gang until Apple acquired the rights to Peanuts content.

In 2020, Apple announced that the holiday specials would only appear on their streaming platform, AppleTV. However, after pushback from a loyal fanbase of the timeless cartoon, Apple decided to broadcast the movies on PBS.

Movieguide® previously reported:

AppleTV will preserve a holiday tradition as the Peanuts holiday specials return to national broadcast television, after all, ad-free, on PBS and PBS Kids.

The company, which owns the rights to Charles Schultz’s beloved Peanuts, announced that they rescinded their original plan to show the Peanuts specials A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING and A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS exclusively on AppleTV.

“‘Peanuts’ fans will have even more ways to watch Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang on their holiday adventures as Apple and PBS team up for special ad-free broadcasts of A CHARLIE BROWN THANKSGIVING and A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS,'” Apple said in a press release.

Apple’s decision to air the specials on PBS came after uproar from Peanuts fans who were unhappy when Apple announced that their ownership prohibited the special from airing on television, effectively ending a 55-year-tradition.

Apple originally planned to allow users to access the specials for free on certain days leading into the holiday. However, many fans called for the Peanuts specials to return to traditional broadcast television through a petition on Change.org.
