Denzel Washington: Success Was ‘Given To Me By The Grace Of God’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Denzel Washington continues to spread his Christian faith as he discusses his acting career and the hand God has had in it.

While appearing on DESUS & MERO, Washington said that “by the grace of God,” he was “given the natural ability to act.”

Even though the actor has an undeniable natural talent for acting, he emphasized that he still works very hard to be the best he can be.

“That’s why I did [study],” he continued. “And it paid off.”

Washington also talked about the importance of humility while working in Hollywood.

“One of the most important lessons in life that you should know is to remember to have an attitude of gratitude, of humility, understand where the gift comes from,” he said.

The star also made sure to note that everything he has achieved has been through the power of God.

“It’s not mine,” he said, referring to his career successes. “It’s been given to me by the grace of God.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Washington’s emphasis on gratitude:

Denzel Washington recently talked about how faith influenced his directing of A JOURNAL FOR JORDAN.

“[We] always started the day with prayer,” Washington told Relevant magazine. The actor would gather the cast and crew to pray each day before shooting and he says it transformed the movie. “There’s all kinds of little miracles that you run into that you didn’t anticipate.” …

Washington’s father was a Pentecostal minister. Washington spent his life working to lead a life that would make his father proud, using his faith to guide his work.

“If you have faith, then have faith,” he stated. “It’s easy to say, harder to do. And you do forget.”

“Didn’t always know how it would [work],” Washington continued, walking about his career. “But just being thankful and having an attitude of gratitude [helped].”
