Robert Rodriguez Returns to Direct New Re-Imagined SPY KIDS Movie For Netflix

By Movieguide® Staff

The SPY KIDS classic family-friendly franchise will continue with a new movie headed to Netflix.

According to Netflix, original director Robert Rodriguez is back for the upcoming reboot.

“Spy Kids was released March 30, 2001,” Netflix wrote on Facebook. “So the 21st anniversary of the beloved action comedy feels like the perfect time to reveal that Robert @Rodriguez will write, direct, and produce a reimagining of the beloved franchise and introduce the world to a new family of spies.”

Since 2001’s SPY KIDS, Rodriguez has directed SPY KIDS 2: ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS, SPY KIDS 3: GAME OVER, and 2011’s SPY KIDS 4: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD. Both the original and the sequel were nominated for Movieguide®’s Best Movies for Families.

The theme of SPY KIDS 2 is the importance of family ties. The themes are honoring family ties, justice, effort, courage, teamwork, love conquers evil, and the importance of risking our life to defend people. I am a Christian. We are representatives and ambassadors of God. I really appreciate Him for giving me such a tremendous opportunity to be involved with the SPY KIDS projects, with our excellent director, Robert Rodriguez and other great cast members and staff,” SPY KIDS star Alexa PenaVega previously said of the franchise at the Movieguide® Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry.

The Hollywood Reporter reported

The original Spy Kids featured Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino as two spies who are kidnapped, and their two children, played by Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara, who must rescue them while also dealing with family secrets.

Plot details of the new Spy Kids are being kept submerged, but the intent is to introduce a new family of spies.
