Tom Selleck recently shared the one thing he wishes BLUE BLOODS explored with his character, Frank Reagan, before the show’s end.
“Everybody says, ‘Well, it’d be nice to see [Frank] have a relationship,’” the actor told TV Insider. “If I had any regrets, it would be that because they weren’t writing a relationship, he didn’t get to flirt often enough. But that didn’t fit what became our format.”
Tom Selleck relished playing police commissioner Frank Reagan on “Blue Bloods.” Yet, he regrets there was no opening for romance in the character’s arc. https://t.co/EGUnOpFXyA

Showrunner Kevin Wade touched on the topic in a 2024 TV Insider interview, telling the publication, “The bar would be pretty high to be able to make a good Frank Reagan police commissioner story out of him dating.”
“We tried it a couple of times with some success, but it wasn’t an area we visited a lot,” Wade continued. “He didn’t have a romance with Det. Baker [Abigail Hawk], but if this was a 1940s comedy with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy or Cary Grant, Baker would be Gal Friday.”
So, is there a possibility Frank might finally find romance in spin-off BOSTON BLUE?
“I don’t know if I would do BOSTON BLUE. That’s another show,” Selleck said, via Woman’s World. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure BLUE BLOODS has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan. I can’t predict the future. But I would like to do a comedy because I’ve done a few that were successful.”
However, BOSTON BLUE’s cast and crew are still holding out hope for a cameo from Selleck.
“We love the idea, and we’re open to it if it makes sense storytelling-wise,” co-creator Brandon Margolis said. “We’re never closing the door on any of the Reagans or any possibility of bringing pieces from the larger universe into our bubble in Boston.”
BOSTON BLUE star Donnie Wahlberg added, “I can say, would I love for Tom [Selleck] to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes.”
“Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it,” he continued.
While it seems unlikely Selleck will make an appearance on BOSTON BLUE, fans of BLUE BLOODS are hopeful Frank might finally get his romantic plot line in the spin-off show.
