Seattle Seahawks team chaplain Jonathan Rainey wants his team to take one more message to heart before Super Bowl LX on Sunday.
“It’s about trusting and about pressing in and trusting Christ when it’s uncomfortable. We know that game is going to be uncomfortable. We know that during life — this game is a precursor to our life, and it’s a picture of the ebbs and flows of life, and life is going to get uncomfortable,” he said on an episode of the “Sports Spectrum” podcast.
“But where are you going to go, and who are you going to lean into? Who are you going to trust? Where are you going to find your peace, where are you going to find your joy?” Rainey asked. “And ultimately, it’s found in a person. Your healing is found in a person. Your restoration, your renewal, is found in a person. That person is Jesus Christ. And so He is our true north. He is our North Star. He is the person by whom our compass points north.”

“And so that’s the message, and that’s what I want to leave with our guys in this last chapel,” the chaplain added. “But it’s a message that’s going to ring throughout life. And so they’ll have it. I’ll print it off for them, and I want them to understand it’s going to help them in the game, whether win or lose, but it’s going to help them in life, wherever they go.”

Rainey has encouraged many players throughout his career, including Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Leonard Williams, Russell Wilson and more.
Smith-Njigba recently credited God for the Seahawks incredible win in the NFC Championship against the Los Angeles Rams.
“I just want to give all glory to God. Without Him, I’m nothing,” the wide receiver said on the field after the game. “Just what He has had on this team and this city, so I just want to give Him all the glory. It’s an honor to be here in Seattle. It’s an honor to lace them up with these guys. For us to be going to the Super Bowl is a dream come true.”
He echoed those sentiments in the post-game press conference.
“I want to give all glory to God. Win or lose, draw. I wouldn’t be here without Him, without the sacrifices that everyone makes. Family, friends, teammates, coaches. Super honored to be a Seahawk and to give everything on the field for my brothers,” he said.
Rainey hopes his players take his message of hope and faith to the field for Super Bowl LX. The Seahawks will face the New England Patriots on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m.
