SOUND OF MUSIC Cast Gathers To Honor Julie Andrews With Lifetime Achievement Award
By Movieguide® Contributor
The cast who played the children in THE SOUND OF MUSIC recently gathered to celebrate their former co-star, Julie Andrews and her AFI Lifetime Achievement Award.
Not only did Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich), Duane Chase (Kurt), Angela Cartwright (Brigitta), Debbie Turner (Marta) and Kym Karath (Gretl) attend the event, they also led a sing-a-long to “Do Re Mi.”
The group gathered for a photo, but there were a few noticeable faces missing. Charmian Carr (Liesl) and Heather Menzies-Urich (Louisa) died in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Christopher Plummer, who starred as Capt. Georg von Trapp, died last year.
Cartwright spoke with Fox News in 2018 about her experience working with Andrews on THE SOUND OF MUSIC, saying: “I loved her. We all did. You can kind of tell in the movie. We totally enjoyed her. She embraced us right from the very beginning. She sang to us in between takes and we would dance. She just did MARY POPPINS’ so she would sing all these songs from that film. I mean, you can really tell that we adored her. She’s such a talent. She has such an amazing voice and it really was a great experience.
“It’s fascinating because sometimes you make a movie and you don’t really see each other anymore or stay in touch,” Cartwright continued. “But we’ve all stayed in touch. We’ve certainly gotten together for celebrations and reunions. Whenever we lose a cast member, it always feels like we lost a family member. We all know what’s going on in each other’s lives and we’ve continued to do that during the 50-plus years [since filming].”
The SOUND OF MUSIC is continually recognized as one of the best movies in cinema history.
Movieguide®’s review of THE SOUND OF MUSIC reads:
THE SOUND OF MUSIC is one of the greatest movies of all time. Released in 1965, it helped save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy. The last musical created by Rodgers and Hammerstein, it featured Julie Andrews as Maria, a troublesome Austrian postulate sent by the Abby to serve as the governess for the seven children of Captain Von Trapp, a wealthy, retired Austrian naval officer.
The movie contrasts Maria’s sincere desire to serve God with her rebellious nature. In the Abby the nuns sing, “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” When she’s sent to serve as governess she exhibits a clear unwillingness to obey her employer. She wins over a rebellious group of children by taking their side against their father who treats them like a ship’s crew rather than his children. As Maria, Julie Andrews creates a character so likable you want to see the movie over and over. The music by Rodgers and Hammerstein is so good you’ll want to sing it yourself. The setting is breathtakingly beautiful. There is no bad language, sex, nudity or violence – period. The movie stands as a testament to the incredible box office potential of clean, wholesome movies.
