After three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, Khari Willis announced his retirement from the NFL due to his new passion for a career in Christian ministry.

The Colts safety posted the news on his social media: “I am both humbled and excited to pursue the holy call that God has for my life which brings me much joy and purpose.”

“I’d first like to thank the Indianapolis Colts organization for granting me the opportunity to compete in the National Football League the past three years,” Willis wrote. “I’ve built lifelong relationships with numerous teammates, coaches, and support staff that have impacted me greatly. The lessons I’ve learned in this phase of my life will be valuable for me in my next chapter.”

“With much prayer and deliberation, I have elected to officially retire from the NFL as I endeavor to devote the remainder of my life to the further advancement of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” he added. “I thank all of my family, friends, and those who have supported me on this journey thus far and I look forward to your continued support through the next phase of my life.”

Despite his impact on the team’s success, the Colts’ Head Coach, Frank Reich, said he supports Willis’ decision.

“We’re thankful and appreciative of Khari’s contributions to the Colts both on and off the field over the last three seasons,” Reich, an outspoken Christian, said. “Khari’s character, leadership and professionalism will be missed in our locker room as well his play on Sundays. I admire and respect his decision to transition into the next stage of his life and ministry and my prayers will always be with him.”

Willis is not the only NFL player to leave the professional football field to serve Christ in ministry.

Movieguide® previously reported on two-time Super Bowl champion Stefen Wisniewski:

Two-time Super Bowl champion Stefen Wisniewski recently announced his retirement from the NFL to pursue a career as a pastor.

Over his 10 years in the league, Wisniewski won Super Bowls with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.

Wisniewski told fans of his decision via his Twitter.

“After 10 seasons in the NFL, I’m retiring. I absolutely loved playing the game of football, but after 10 years, my body, my mind, and my heart are telling me it’s time to move on,” Wisniewski said. “What am I going to do next? I’m gonna be a pastor. The absolute best part of my life is my relationship with Jesus Christ and I can’t imagine a better full-time job than teaching people the Bible and sharing the love of Christ with others.”
