REAGAN Star Opens Up About Late President’s Stand for the Principles of Freedom

By Movieguide® Contributor

Chris Massoglia, who will play Pat Boone in the upcoming REAGAN movie, recently opened up about some of the plot points and how faith played a major part in the late president’s life.

REAGAN is set to hit theaters in 2023, and stars Dennis Quaid as Ronald Reagan. The movie will follow the president as he goes from actor to politician to president. His time in Hollywood is what led to his friendship with Boone.

Massoglia actually got the opportunity to meet Boone and listen to his stories about Reagan and their relationship.

“We walked through my lines and moments in the film,” the actor said. “I’ve never played a historical figure where you could actually talk to the person and ask them directly, ‘What was your thought process at this moment?’ That was really fun for me, and it helped as an actor to be even more in the mindset of the character.”

Massoglia also got some advice from the star.

“One of the things I asked Pat was about marriage since he mentioned it as one of his greatest accomplishments,” the actor shared. “He said his faith and commitment to his wife were often mocked by those around him. He would just laugh though and shrug it off and say, ‘Hey, it’s working out pretty well for me, isn’t it?’”

In addition to sharing his encounters with Boone, Massoglia discussed the role Reagan’s faith will play in REAGAN. The actor describes one scene between Reagan and his “very devout” mother, Nelle.

“She gives her son a book called That Printer of Udell’s and Reagan sees himself in the main character of that book,” Massoglia explained. “A young man who finds God and goes to Washington to become a congressman.”

The actor said working on REAGAN gave him a new appreciation for the president.

“I wasn’t alive during his presidency but studying him and his impact, I have a great appreciation for Reagan and the America I inherited because of him,” he shared. “This experience has given me a great appreciation for Reagan’s stand against communism and for the principles of freedom that he believed in.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Quaid’s role as Reagan in REAGAN:

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE actor Dennis Quaid will portray Ronald Reagan in the upcoming biopic, REAGAN. However, Quaid said he was initially confused why they asked him to play the 40th U.S. president.

“I didn’t understand why they were offering me Ronald Reagan because I just didn’t see it,” Quaid told Entertainment Weekly. “I admired him so much, and so I had a chill of fear go down my spine when I was offered it. That’s usually kind of a sign that maybe I should do it, because it’s out of my comfort zone.”

SOUL SURFER’s Sean McNamara will direct with NO SAFE SPACE’s Mark Joseph producing. Quaid also starred in the faith-filled and Movieguide® Award-Winning SOUL SURFER.

REAGAN is adapted from conservative author Paul Kengor’s book “The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism” and will span Reagan’s life “from his childhood to his time in the oval office.”

Producer Mark Joseph revealed that he talked to over 50 people who knew Reagan personally to add to the sprawling biographical drama. The movie will dive into Reagan’s childhood, his time in Hollywood, and his constant fight against communism in the entertainment industry and America.

Quaid said that Reagan is his favorite president, which is why the role was intimidating. But the 66-year-old actor maintains that it is an honor.

“I tried to share some of that human frailty, because none of us are perfect,” he says. “It was an honor to play him.”
