Hanson Brothers Reflect on Fame and Family: ‘Everyone Feels Loved and Valued’

The Hanson brothers recently reflected on fame and family and how their lives have changed since their song “MMMBop” first hit the airwaves. The fathers — they have 15 children among them — are no longer young boys in the spotlight, but that’s exactly how they like it.
The group skyrocketed to fame in 1997 when they released “MMMBop,” which went No. 1 internationally. Hanson ended up leaving their record label in 2003 to create their own, and rejected Hollywood or New York in favor of their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“I think we’re lucky that we’ve always been a little bit of an anomaly,” Zac Hanson shared. “To be brothers who don’t fight that much and who share a dream, that’s unique. We’ve been a band for a long time, and a lot of people go, ‘Wow, you’re normal,’ because the industry has a way of leaving its marks on people. But we just always had a really strong sense of place.”
“MMMBop” was a huge hit, but it also boxed the group in; fans and critics wanted the band to keep making youthful, upbeat pop music.
“‘MMMBop’ is something that wasn’t false, and it wasn’t somebody else’s message,” added Taylor Hanson. “The relationship with the fans that we made with that song continued for years after. We always aspired to have longevity.”
Hanson is still making music, and balancing their careers with their families. Zac has five kids, Isaac has three, and Taylor has seven. The brothers are all married to women they met at Hanson concerts, and the brothers credit their wives with being the backbone of the families.
“We’re married to amazing women, and they match our personalities very well because we’re not at all the same,” Zac said.
“Everyone feels loved and valued, and that’s coming from my wife in all directions toward me and our kids,” he continued.
Taylor added, “[Marriage] isn’t always perfect days, but it’s a shared adventure. I’m so grateful.”
Taylor also said, “The job of being a dad is to sacrifice everything you want for that kid. I may be in the middle of meeting some famous musician, but, sorry, I’ve got to call my daughter and talk to her about her day.”
