Could Digital Content Overtake Traditional Hollywood Production?

By Movieguide® Staff

As social media platforms continue to grow in popularity and offer digital creators unique pathways for extra income, traditional Hollywood could have trouble keeping up.

Through YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, the traditional strategies for marketing yourself as an actor or creator are changing.

Traditionally, the best avenue to media fame came from Hollywood. But now, there are several viable options that offer more autonomy.

MrBeast, also known as Jimmy Donaldson, boasts 98.2 million subscribers on YouTube and has paved the way for creators who want to fund their projects.

Other creators still desire the Hollywood dream but are finding that they have less freedom when they look to Hollywood studios to expand their brand.

Kris Collins, a Canadian TikTok creator with nearly 45 million followers, said that when she turned to Hollywood studios, she felt like she lost control over her content.

“I tried to go into networks or into production companies, trying to maybe make a show out of it and do that kind of thing, but everybody wants to … change it so much that I know the audience would be so upset with it, so I think I’m probably going to do it in my own way,” Collins said on a panel at VidCon.

“Not everybody, but everybody in the digital space, we look at the traditional space and it’s like heaven, like that’s where we should be, but it’s not,” Collins added. “It’s beautiful that I can write what I want. I post what I want. I can talk to my audience one on one, which is super cool. You can’t do that in the traditional space.”

As Hollywood stars and TikTok stars turn towards the digital online space, more and more content independent of traditional Hollywood productions will appear on the phones and TV screens of families and their children.

Movieguide®’s Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry outlines how moral and uplifting content propels movies to the top of the box office. In contrast, movies with excessive sex, violence, and language make the least money.

The same can be said for online content. As one of the most successful YouTubers in history, Jimmy Donaldson (MrBeast)’s content is mainly free of foul language and inappropriate content.

That being said, parents should use discernment before letting their children browse the near-endless content on YouTube and teach them using God’s word.
