Investigation of RUST Shooting Nears Conclusion and ‘Final Charging Decisions’

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department recently updated the public on their investigation of the shooting on the set of RUST in October 2021, after Alec Baldwin’s gun fired, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The investigation is nearly complete, and “the final Sheriff’s Office investigative case file will be forwarded to the District Attorney for review and final charging decisions,” a statement from the Sheriff’s Department read.

The sheriff’s department, along with the detectives from New York’s Suffolk County Police Department, is working to obtain, process and disclose Baldwin’s phone records, which are “forthcoming.”
When the records are obtained by the sheriff’s department, “our detectives will need to then thoroughly review” them “for evidentiary purposes,” Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said in a statement.
Luke Nikas, Baldwin’s attorney, told Forbes that he was told the “Suffolk County PD has been processing” the actor’s phone records “to turn over to the New Mexico authorities and that this will finally happen next week.”

While rehearsing for the upcoming Western RUST on location in New Mexico, actor Alec Baldwin discharged a gun, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring the film’s director, Joel Souza.
Hutchins was rushed to a hospital by helicopter and was soon pronounced dead. Souza was taken by ambulance to a separate medical center. And in the aftermath of it all, Baldwin voices his sorrow regarding the incident as well as his sympathy to the family of the deceased.
Oct. 22, on Twitter, the actor said:
There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours. I’m fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred and I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.
Authorities are currently looking into the fatal shooting on set, and criminal charges have yet to be ruled out.
