The filmmakers behind the Moveiguide® Award-winning movie and box office success, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE, announced a new documentary project about the iconic singer Johnny Cash.

The documentary will feature over 100 tapes from the music star that were never released to the public and outline Cash’s journey to faith.

Produced by Kingdom Story Company, JOHNNY CASH: THE REDEMPTION OF AN AMERICAN ICON is set to release in theaters for three nights only on Dec. 5, 6 and 7 as a Fathom Event.

The Erwin Brothers are known for their faith-based movies like AMERICAN UNDERDOG, I STILL BELIEVE, and WOODLAWN.

“Johnny Cash is an American icon who undoubtedly shaped the musical landscape,” producer Jon Erwin said. “Behind the fame is the true story of a man who was haunted by his own inner demons, and through facing them, ultimately found an unshakable faith in God.”

The documentary will also feature interviews with John Carter Cash, Marty Stuart, Wynonna Judd, Jimmie Allen, Alice Cooper, Franklin Graham, Joanne Cash Yates, Greg Laurie, Sheryl Crow, and Tim McGraw.

“I think of all the documentaries made about my dad, he’d be most excited about this one,” John Carter Cash, Cash’s son, said.

Movieguide® previously on Cash’s battle with depression, addiction, and his eventual peace found in his Christian faith:

Johnny Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, shared his father’s Christian faith in his new book, “Walking the Line: 90 Devotions of Truth and Hope Based on the Faith of Johnny Cash.”

The book collects Cash’s quotes about faith, as well as never-before-seen thoughts on Christianity from the country singer.

“My father’s faith was defining of who he was,” John said of his father. “My dad fell short in many ways through his life, but he always went back to that faith. He always carried that with him no matter what, wherever he went. Everything that he did in his life, that was a foundation.”

Even when his dad strayed, John said he would always “come back…full circle” and relied on his faith through good times and bad.

“The things that he stood for are … essential aspects of love and respect for family and forgiveness,” he shared.

Cash faced many struggles over the years, including serious health issues towards the end of his life, but John said his father always looked to God for help.

“His faith was like unto Job,” John explained. “He did not curse God. He realized that he was human, and his faith helped carry him.”
