Alternative Tech Companies Sign Letter for Regulatory Legislation for Big Tech

By Movieguide® Staff

Alternatives to the industry’s largest tech companies have banded together in favor of the federal regulation of big tech.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has sponsored the proposed bill, which is called the “American Innovation and Choice Online Act.”

Companies like DuckDuckGo, a privacy-centered search engine alternative to Google, proposed new laws to the U.S. House and Senate, PYMNTS reported.

The Switzerland-based email service Proton, which encrypts communication, supported regulatory legislation and over a dozen other companies.

A portion of the letter reads: “Massive tech platforms can exert influence over society and the digital economy because they ultimately have the power to collect, analyze, and monetize exorbitant amounts of personal information.”

“This is not by accident, as some of the tech giants have intentionally abused their gatekeeper positions to lock users into perpetual surveillance while simultaneously making it difficult to switch to privacy-protective alternatives.”

Reuters reported:

While more and more Americans are embracing privacy-first technologies, some dominant firms still use their gatekeeper power to limit competition and restrict user choice. We implore you to pass AICOA as it would remove barriers for consumers to freely select privacy protective services.

Sen. Klobuchar said that the mass amounts of money that big tech companies have has made legislation difficult.

“What has slowed us down is the incredible onslaught of money, and that’s what happens with monopolies,” Klobuchar said, according to Bloomberg. “The senators are talking about it, about the ads running in each state.”
