Tauren Wells Reflects on Today’s Worship Culture

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist and worship leader Tauren Wells is sharing his thoughts on worship music today, as well as what he wants listeners to take away from his music.

“We just have not done a very good job of leading from our weaknesses, from leading from our wounds,” Wells explained, referring to people’s preference of putting on a fake image, rather than appearing vulnerable.

Wells shared that he feels this also comes across in Christian music, as well.

“Most Christian songs that you hear, it’s resolved in three minutes or less. You’re at the absolute bottom, and it doesn’t seem like there’s any way out – but then, by the end, life is amazing, and Jesus is good,” he explained.

“Yes, that is true,” Wells said. “[But] I’m trying to get beyond the surface, and let the waters be choppy, acknowledge the storm, acknowledge the fact that we’re sinking. Now, the undercurrent may be joy, the undercurrent may be peace, but we’re still wrestling on the surface of what it is to feel disappointed, to work really hard for something and to come up short, to pour your life into a relationship and it not work, to try to be present with your children, only to have them for their own reasons, pushing you away.

“We need to deal with how these things actually affect us on a soul level,” Wells went on. “And the first thing is giving yourself permission to process it – not to put a bandage or a bandaid on it.”

The musician shared that he has benefited from counseling, and encourages others to share their struggles with people close to them and “finding God in that.”

“If you ignore the moon, you don’t appreciate the sun. If you don’t feel what it’s like to be in the dark moments, then the warmth and the beauty of a sunrise doesn’t really mean much to you,” Wells explained. “There is a morning coming, and of course, I believe God allows the sun to rise in different seasons of our lives, and we get to experience His goodness in the here and now, but don’t get it flipped.”

He continued, “There is a greater horizon and ultimate morning that we’re going to step out of the night of this world into the morning that God has for us, where the only thing that shines is the sun,” Wells added. “And there is no weeping, there are no tears, there is no disappointment or hurt, it is just the goodness of God radiating for eternity. And so even our weeping, the Scripture says that those who sow in tears will reap in joy. Well, that’s not just a promise for here and now – it is – but it’s a promise for eternal happiness, eternal joy, eternal peace. And I want to remind people that there is a Heaven, and that there is joy in that place.”

Wells dropped new music earlier this year. Movieguide® previously reported:

Christian music artist Tauren Wells offered a word of encouragement to fans alongside the release of his new album, ‘Joy in the Morning.’

“It’s been two years in the making,” Wells told PEOPLE of the album. “We’ve really invested a lot into it. Really, I just hope that people take a great sense of hope from this particular project.”

“I hope that as they listen through it, they find the songs they want to put on their workout playlist. The songs that they’re going to turn on Saturday morning when they’re making breakfast,” he continued. “The songs that really allow them to evaluate their inner life as well. I think music does this amazing job of opening up our soul and our spirit, and allowing us to take the inventory of what’s happening in our hearts.”

The album includes ten tracks that Wells said he wrote primarily during the COVID-19 lockdowns.

“It gave me time to be at home and to contemplate things that I hadn’t even really thought about. I realized there was a lot happening in my heart that I wasn’t aware of. I think a lot of us live like that because we’re so busy, and there’s so much happening,” he explained.

“There are a lot of people out there, like me, who are very driven and ambitious and achievement orientated,” he added. “You’re going after your goals and your dreams, and rise and grind and all that kind of stuff. But the problem with that type of mentality is that a lot of times, our inner life gets overlooked.”

However, Wells said he used the time in isolation to evaluate his heart and career.

“I think that time gave me time to pay attention to what was happening in my heart, and to process it, which everyone processes differently. I happen to process through writing songs and making music. It was a really beautiful journey,” he said.
