Jenna Bush Hager Calls Mother Laura ‘Our Steady Rock’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Author Jenna Bush Hager recently shared details about her parents’ parenting style, as well as a story about a time she and her twin Barbara got caught in a lie.

“We had curfews,” Hager explained, but “they weren’t that strict.”

She and Barbara took advantage of their not-strict curfew one night, when they tried to sneak out to a party.

“There was a party senior year of high school, and I went to it [saying] I was ‘spending the night at Ferrell Fields’ house,’ and all of a sudden my parents show up,” Hager said. “They took me and Barbara out of that party. They weren’t strict but if they said ‘no’ and we went behind their back…”

So, what did the twins do while they were grounded?

“I sat and did puzzles with my parents while all the other people [went out],” Hager laughed. “They’re like, ‘Would you like some hot chocolate?’ Like, ‘Not really.’ I mean, we were grounded. Remember, grounded was a thing. Grounded was a thing.”

Despite the teenage rebellion, Hager said her mother, Laura Bush, “was the best.”

“She was the most calm human that it was almost, we couldn’t understand it,” Hager explained. “We could not rattle her. But she was our steady rock of a mom.”

Hager is also a mom, to Mila, 9, Poppy, 6, and Hal, 3. Movieguide® previously reported on her thoughts on motherhood:

Jenna Bush Hager is opening up about the motherhood moments that are “not glamorous” and “exhausting,” and how she spins those moments into something positive.

Hager shares three children with her husband Henry — Mila, 9, Poppy, 6, and Hal, 2.

The TODAY show host loves being a mom, but she did admit there are also “parts of mothering that are tedious and can be boring.”

She explained, “What I try to do is think that is life, those tedious parts are also that’s what we’re doing, that’s what we’re living. I try to find the love and the pleasure that I know I have for my kids even in the tedious parts of parenting.

“I hope I can have fun even when I’m exhausted and ready to go to bed and have asked them to brush their teeth for the one-hundredth time,” Hager shared. “I just want to try to love those moments because that is it, that’s all we got.”
