THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

In THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET, a Romance novelist, using the pseudonym Amanda Gris, finds her world crumbling around her. Brought by circumstance to the point of attempted suicide, she sets out on a journey that leads to purpose and happiness. Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has expertly crafted an engrossing film that, unfortunately, promotes an existential worldview.

Content:

(Pa, LLL, S, N, A, D, M) Pagan existentialist worldview with minor biblical elements; 12 obscenities, 2 profanities & 7 vulgarities; sexual fondling between husband & wife; blurred male frontal nudity through shower curtain; alcohol use; drug abuse; and, attempted suicide, theft & threatened blackmail.

More Detail:

The secret in THE FLOWER OF MY SECRET is Leo, a female Romance novelist under the pseudonym: Amanda Gris. She has no romance, happiness or meaning in her life. She finds herself being crushed by one misfortune after another. Even though she is under contract to write five Romance novels per year, she loses her desire to write. Her latest novel, an attempt to break into a new genre, has been stolen by the son of her maid Blanca and plagiarized into a screenplay. Her publisher threatens to sue her and reveal her real identity. While agonizing over her devitalized marriage, her troubles culminate when her husband commits adultery with her best friend. Leo’s attempt to find happiness leads to attempted suicide. Her brief return to the village of her mother’s birth seems to act as a catalyst for change as she finds new strength, and events apparently begin to work in her favor.

Regrettably, this expertly crafted film by Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has enough offensive elements to justify its R rating. Its existential worldview promotes the false belief that we can interpret meaning in our own lives. Meaning and purpose of life are found in our Creator. Self-interpreted meaning of life is subject to our fallen sinful nature and is transitory at best.
