Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea Misses the Mark on What a Relationship with God Looks Like

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist, Flea, discusses his belief in God but lacks any relationship with Jesus.
“I’m a praying guy,” Flea says after praying at the start of the interview. “I pray in the morning when I get up, when I go to bed, when I eat. And when I do an interview, I’ll just stop for a second – like, let me get out of the way and let go of everything.”
Flea, however, is not praying to the Christian God. He is communing with his idea of God rather than the living Creator.
“I’m not religious in any way, but I kind of believe in God,” he explained. “I try to live a life that honors my idea of what God is – like a divine energy.”
“For me, music is the voice of God,” he added.
Flea turned to God in the early ‘90s after becoming sick with chronic fatigue. His life of partying and drugs had left him empty and craving something new. Although he had been staunchly atheist for the first thirty years of his life, he decided to give God a chance.
Unfortunately, the god that he found is not the God of the Bible.
In John 14:6, Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Flea’s faith is missing the crucial aspect of a relationship with Jesus. He is missing the acknowledgment of his own sin and the need for a savior to restore his relationship with God. Furthermore, he is missing the community of believers – a critical part in any Christian’s walk of faith.
Ultimately, Flea’s incessant prayer is in vain. Although he believes in a higher being, he misses the mark on who the Creator really is. Rather than worship Jesus and find real faith, Flea relies on an idea of God that is alive only in his head.
Please pray that Flea comes to know the authentic saving grace of Christ Jesus.
