Ravens Coach John Harbaugh Finds True Success in ‘Connection with God’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh is heading into his 16th season with the team, knowing that his success comes from God.

Harbaugh frequently discusses when he gave his life to Christ at Miami (OH) University.

“Two teammates invited me to a Bible study. I was intrigued by the Bible’s logic. Things started clicking about God, the universe, sin and Christ’s death on the cross. Before long, I surrendered myself to Christ,” he shared. “I remember walking home thinking, ‘If I fall on the ground and die right now, I’m right with God.’ I felt a real freedom,” the Gospel Light Society reported his saying.

“Really, it comes down to trust, I do believe,” he stated on the SportsSpectrum podcast. “I trust providence. I trust God’s will, His plan. As much as anything, try to put it in His hands because when you look back, you can see where He’s brought you.”

As a coach, he has had to trust God’s plan. Last season, when the Ravens’ starting quarterback Lamar Jackson suffered a torn PCL, Harbaugh felt God was telling him to wait amid the uncertainty.

“I was clearly under instruction to wait,” he said. “Basically, God was telling me, ‘This is not something you can do anything about. And if you do something about it, all you’re going to do is mess it up. This is in My hands right now.’”

Movieguide® recently reported on Jackson’s contract extension:

Ravens quarterback, Lamar Jackson, just became the highest-paid player in the NFL as he signed a five-year extension with the Baltimore Ravens.

In a press conference following the contract extension, Jackson stated, “I just really wanted to get something done here. I wanted to be here. … I really want to finish my career here and win a Super Bowl here…”

“I kept Him first at all times no matter what I went through. … I just kept my faith with Him, and now we’re here,” he said.

Despite Harbaugh’s success as a coach, he gives all the credit to God.

“To me, success is alignment with God,” Harbaugh said. “Perfect success would be perfect alignment with God and God’s will… He knows what our true desires are, what our purpose is, so trying to find that purpose through connection with God — being connected and filled with the spirit of God, the Holy Spirit — that is success.”

“The biggest thing I’ve learned faith-wise is that God is in the driver’s seat. That is what faith is. It’s the belief in the things that are unseen. It’s a certain trust in life and in God, our Creator,” he added.

Before coming to the Ravens, Harbaugh coached the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive backs for nine years. He has since led the Ravens to 71 wins since 2008 and “s considered one of the best head coaches currently in the NFL,” the Gospel Light Society reported.

Sports Spectrum reported, “Since Harbaugh arrived in 2008, the Ravens have finished under .500 just twice and have made the playoffs 10 times. They reached the conference championship game three times between 2008 and 2012, winning Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3, 2013.”

“The Ravens face the Washington Commanders in their second preseason game Monday and open the regular season Sept. 10 against the Houston Texans. Baltimore has won 10 or more games and reached the playoffs four of the last five seasons,” SportsSpectrum added.
