A New Man: How Christ Transformed Phil Robertson

Phil and Al Robertson sat down with Kirk Cameron on TAKEAWAYS to talk about Jesus and how he transformed their lives.
“I basically was a sinful young man, no doubt about it,” Phil Robertson said about his past. After Robertson hurt his young family, he had a radical turnaround.
Before Robertson’s transformation, Miss Kay, Robertson’s wife, had taken their kids and left Robertson due to his alcohol abuse and unfaithfulness. Robertson’s oldest son, Al, weighed in on what it was like to suddenly have a “new” father as a small child.
“I was obviously alive for most of Dad’s most difficult years. I had the front row seat to him not being the man of God and the leader of our family,” Al said in an interview with Risen Magazine. “So I have all those memories that my brothers don’t have, which I’m glad they don’t.”
Miss Kay said in another interview, “What I would tell my boys all the time is: ‘That’s not your daddy. That’s the devil in your daddy.”
Al told Cameron, “From our perspective, we just look up one day, and Dad drives up in the truck with the TV in the back, and all the things that we didn’t have you know, and he’s like back in our lives, and so we were thrilled.”
After Robertson’s baptism, Al’s younger brother Jase asked Miss Kay, “’Does this mean the devil’s left our daddy?’ And she said it does, but now he’s probably still got some growing to do,” Al shared.
After Robertson’s change, he told his formerly like-minded friends to “hit the road” because the old Phil was gone. Twelve years later, one of those friends asked Robertson to share his testimony with him. He became a follower of Christ and died two months later. “That’s how close he cut it, but he made it,” he said.
Though Robertson’s testimony contains some unpleasant parts, he still humbly shares it when he tells others about the gospel.
Robertson’s new biopic, THE BLIND, depicts his and Miss Kay’s life story. It premieres in theaters on September 28 through October 5, 2023.
