Why Danica McKellar Chooses to Homeschool Her Son

Actress Danica McKellar recently shared some homeschooling benefits she discovered through educating her son at home.

“I traveled so much for work…I started doing these romantic comedy movies shooting up in Canada…like the ones I’m doing at Great American now. And with all the travel, it works so well to be flexible like that,” Mckellar said in a recent Great American Community video. “It’s a lot of multitasking, I will say it. I’m a busy person, I’m a working mom, but I want to make sure I’m giving the important time to [my son] Draco.”

“There are more and more reasons that maybe homeschooling is a good choice…I’ve had a good experience with it…You just have more control over what your child is exposed to. And in all kinds of ways socially academically, you name it, you can be a little more in control,” McKellar said.

THE WONDER YEARS actress occasionally posts about homeschooling on her Instagram. She shared photos of extra downtime with her son Draco and a video of the two singing all the periodic table elements.

Many other actors also choose to homeschool their children. Movieguide® reported on actors Kevin Sorbo, Kirk Cameron and Lucas Black’s decision to teach their kids at home.

Movieguide® shared Sorbo’s thoughts: “Your responsibility as a parent is to ignite the natural curiosity in your child. And to encourage them to learn…You do not need to know everything.”

Cameron echoed similar sentiments: “It’s up to us as parents to cultivate the hearts and minds and souls of our children toward what is good, toward what is right, beautiful, and true.”

In an article McKellar wrote for Romper, she shared this homeschooling advice: “Take a breath and be patient — with them and yourself! Kids feel our fear and anxiety. We owe it to them and to ourselves to express patience and kindness wherever we can…We are their primary role models. If they see us lose our tempers, should it be any surprise that they mimic that behavior? Nothing they are being taught in school is as important as learning the power of kindness and patience.”

A new study reveals that homeschooling has continued to surge after over one million students left public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Homeschooling saw a 30% increase in 2021-2022 while public school enrollment fell by more than 1.2 million students within the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic,” The Christian Post reported.

The study from the Urban Institute found “private school enrollment increased by 4.3% between the fall of 2019 and the fall of 2021. Data collected between the 2019-2020 school year and the 2021-2022 school year showed that homeschool enrollment rose by 30%.”
