Hailee Steinfeld ‘Not Necessarily’ Surprised BUMBLEBEE Didn’t Get A Sequel

By Movieguide® Contributor

BUMBLEBEE is one of the most beloved installments in the TRANSFORMER franchise, but will it ever get a sequel?

Star Hailee Steinfeld said she was “not necessarily” surprised BUMBLEBEE didn’t score another movie, adding, “I don’t know that I knew the plans beyond that, but I like to take everything one step at a time.”

“I’ve gotten a lot better at that in my life,” she continued. “I tend to get ahead of myself, and so when it comes to these bigger projects that have whispers and more of a future and whatnot, I like to just focus on what’s in front of me and make that the best that I can.”

BUMBLEBEE was a box office success and received favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike. A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

BUMBLEBEE contains a lot of fun action adventure, but it’s almost paint-by-numbers. A lot of imagination has gone into the movie. Some of the dialogue is clunky, some of it is hilarious. Hailee Steinfeld does a terrific job as Charlie. Some of the humor is at the expense of other people, however. Also, some battles are too intense, with good Autobots dismembered and cut in half. BUMBLEBEE also has too much foul language, including a lot of God talk that sometimes sounds positive. There are also some calls to revenge supposed wrongs, and the revenge isn’t pleasant. Eventually, everything comes together in a thrilling ending, complete with resurrection, baptism, renewed life, restored family, and restored relationships.

While Steinfeld wasn’t expecting a BUMBLEBEE sequel, plenty of others were, and for good reason.

Shortly after the movie was released, director Travis Knight said he was already brainstorming ideas for another installment.

“I mean, when I get to the end of one of my movies, I always imagine what’s next for the characters,” he said. “And so, in my mind, I’ve got all these scenarios and adventures that play out, both with Charlie and with Bee and everyone else. We’ll see if the world wants more. Maybe we’ll explore some of those things.”

There were also rumors in 2019 that “producers [were] in development on a sequel to the TRANSFORMERS prequel,” per Cinema Blend.

A BUMBLEBEE sequel might not officially be in the works, but Steinfeld has shared that she would be on board for another TRANSFORMERS movie.

“I think [Steinfeld’s character, Charlie, is] still capable of so much and we see that throughout the course of this film and we see how much growth takes place in such a short period of time that by the end of the film, you know, even though she’s overcome so much,” the actress said. “I still feel she’s got so much to say, a lot more to learn and a long way to go. So I would be interested in exploring that.”
