Late-Night Shows, DANCING WITH THE STARS Return After WGA Strike Ends

By Movieguide® Contributor

The WGA and the studios have reached a tentative agreement, ending the ongoing strike, but when can audiences expect new episodes of their favorite shows?

“The leadership of the WGA West and the WGA East unanimously voted to end the strike at 12.01 a.m. PT Wednesday, allowing writers to return to work, and recommend the agreement reached with studios,” Forbes reported. “The tentative deal will have to be ratified by the union’s members, who will be able to vote on it from October 2 to October 9.”

Terms of the new deal between the WGA and the studios include “pay increases, better benefits, protections against the studios’ use of artificial intelligence, guarantees for streaming compensation, longer-duration employment terms and other perks,” per CNN.

While the end of the writers’ strike means a return to late-night shows and competitions like DANCING WITH THE STARS, fans will have to wait a little longer for new episodes of scripted shows.

THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JIMMY FALLON and LATE NIGHT WITH SETH MEYERS will both return on Oct. 2. DANCING WITH THE STARS premiered as planned on Sept. 26, per TODAY.

SAG-AFTRA’s strike is ongoing, but the resolution reached between the WGA and the studios has many hopeful the actors guild strike will end soon.

“One source told NBC News that the actors guild is hoping to begin negotiations with the AMPTP this week,” the network wrote

NBC continued, “Both daytime and late-night talk shows could resume early next week, two sources close to the AMPTP side of negotiations told NBC News. Talk shows are covered by the SAG-AFTRA Network Code agreement, which is not affected by the ongoing actors strike, so once the writers strike ends, they could resume.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the end of the WGA strike:

After many months of protests and picket marches, the Writers’ Guild of America (WGA) finally reached an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Yet other related organizations still strike.

Deadline reported, “The parties finalized the framework of the deal Sunday when they were able to untangle their stalemate over AI and writing room staffing levels,” but the details aren’t available yet.

“’We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 MBA, which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language,’ the WGA told its members in a release, which came just after sunset and the start of the Yom Kippur holiday that many had seen deadline to wrap up deal after five days of long negotiations,” Deadline wrote.
