PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH

Quality: ****

Content: +1 Moderately questionable elements – discernment required for young children.

PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH catches up with Puss from the Shrek Universe, and he’s used eight of his nine lives. With only one life left, he searches for the Last Wish star to wish for more lives. Yet, he’s not the only one in search of the wish. Jack Horner and Goldilocks and the Three Bears also seek the Last Wish star. Puss teams up with his ex-fiance Kitty Softpaws (who wishes for someone she can trust) and an adorable dog named Perrito to get to the shooting star before the others.

The film is a fun-filled adventure that earned over $400 million in box office sales. While it may seem like a sweet fairytale, there are Biblical lessons hidden within the magical story. While we aren’t granted nine imaginary lives like Puss, we can draw from his wisdom to make the most out of the time we’re given. Let’s look deeper into the movie and explore the morals we can glean from PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH.

Think Of Others Before Yourself

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

If there’s one thing we all know about Puss, it’s his reputation for being arrogant. He’s also known for being careless with his nine lives, as we see him use them up in bar fights and performing dangerous feats. He initially fights to get the Last Wish for himself, but as he battles the Big Bad Wolf for the wish, Puss realizes he’s fighting for his friends and chooses not to use it.

If we live by the words of Philippians 2:3-4, we won’t act out of selfishness or conceit but will put the needs of others before our own. It’s important to have a humble heart and not put ourselves before the Lord or place ourselves above anyone else. Much like Puss, we are the best versions of ourselves when we have goodness of heart.

Accept What You Can’t Change

When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future. Ecclesiastes 7:14

When the doctor breaks it to Puss that he only has one life left, it sends our dear hero into a crisis. His fear of death, which he can’t control, causes him anxiety. Grappling with his mortality, Puss begins his quest to cheat death by using The Last Wish to wish for more lives. Yet, by the end of the story, he overcomes his fear by accepting what he can’t change.

The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 7:14 that God gives a full range of experiences, good and bad. There will be moments when we face situations that are out of our control. We are called to trust the Lord’s timing, including when He calls us to our eternal home in heaven. Casting our anxiety to Him leads us to a fuller life.

Don’t Dwell On Past Pain

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:18-19
When Puss reunites with Kitty Softpaws, she seeks to use The Last Wish to ask someone she can trust. We learn that Puss didn’t leave her at the altar because she never showed up for the wedding, fearing that Puss only loved himself. Painful experiences lead her to believe that anyone she trusts will betray her.
As the story progresses, Kitty learns to let go of past pain and open her heart to trusting again. Isaiah 43:18-19 teaches that we shouldn’t dwell on the past but look ahead to God’s plan for our lives. By releasing past pain and accepting His healing, we open ourselves up for growth and new ways of thinking.

Make The Most Of Today

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12

As we embark on the journey with Puss, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito, we watch Puss lose his passion for life as he tries to avoid death. It’s a profound message for a children’s fantasy film, but he eventually learns to embrace life instead of living in fear. He changes his priorities to treasure every moment he has left without using the Last Wish for himself.

Psalm 90:12 speaks to the hearts of His followers. Our days on earth are numbered, and each day is a valuable gift given to us by the Lord. When we lead a Christ-like life, we grow in wisdom and learn to focus on what’s most important. So, make the most of the time granted and prioritize living out God’s purpose.

Team Friendship

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

While Puss has a history of only looking out for himself, his new friend, an adorable puppy named Perttito, helps him overcome the giant Jack Horner in the final battle for the Wishing Star. By tapping into Team Friendship, Pertitto inspires Goldilocks and The Three Bears to join in the fight with Puss and Kitty Sofypaws. Together, they destroy The Last Wish and defeat Horner.

If we ponder the words of Proverbs 18:24, the Bible teaches that a friend can stick closer than a brother. The Lord provides friendship so that we don’t face hardships alone. Though they may not be related to us by blood, a true friend can feel like family. Goldilocks recognizes the importance of her chosen family with The Three Bears, receiving her wish in the process.

PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH is a delightful film that ignites the imagination. Children and adults can learn heartfelt lessons from the intrepid Puss in Boots and his friends. If we stay humble and treasure the days given to us by the Lord, we can live a life better than anything we could have wished for.
