Pastor Levi Lusko Talks How Parents Can Share Faith With Children

By Movieguide® Contributor

Pastor Levi Lusko talked to Christian singer Matthew West about the importance of intentional parenting following the release of his 90-day devotional for children.

One of a parent’s primary duties is to be aware of the influence they have on their children. Kids pick up many of their views from what their parents say and even more so from what they do. The most important thing parents can give their children is showing them what a life lived for Christ looks like.

Lusko created his devotional, “Marvel At The Moon,” because he understands how difficult it can be to communicate faith to kids.

“Lenox, I lay in bed every night with him, read to him. And the [stories] that he likes he wants read to him over and over and over again,” Lusko said. “And so it was like, okay, you get tired of these stories, and so I wanted their to be 90 devotionals. So you’re reading three months’ worth. And [Lenox] loves this book, which is to me, it has been battle tested.”

“I want there to be something for the adults too, so you’re gonna learn that there’s a Bible on the moon,” he continued. “So like, adults reading it are going to be like, that’s interesting. I didn’t know there was a Bible on the moon. So, easter eggs that are for the adults, scriptural truths for the kids, and then I wanted to not sugarcoat the hard stuff.”

More than just an entertaining read, the pastor hopes to address some of the real-life struggles kids face every day.

“We talk about loneliness, which is at epidemic levels in our culture. We talk about, you know, bullying and anxiousness and death and loss. I wanted to bring these real truths that scripture has real answers for,” he added. “I think sometimes kids’ stuff can be real fluffy, but light on theology, so I wanted to bring through kind of a blend of all of these things.”

Lusko’s previous children’s devotional, “Roar Like A Lion,” tackled similar issues. He shared, “my goal isn’t to protect them from the world – at a certain point – but to prepare them for the world.”

As loneliness skyrocketed during the COVID pandemic, he saw its wide-reaching effects on children and adults alike. For those struggling, he encourages them to find courage in God.

“And I think that God, through faith, can help us to be courageous,” he explained. “The book of Proverbs says, ‘the righteous man is as bold as a lion’…and Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. As we follow him, we shouldn’t have to be afraid, we shouldn’t have to be kowtowing to our feelings, we can be triumphant. And I think we can teach our kids that with God’s power in us, no matter what life throws at us, or how hard life gets, that we can be courageous.”

Like his first kids’ devotional, “Marvel At The Moon” will help children “Face loneliness, peer pressure, and insecurities with confidence…Learn to navigate big feelings and negative emotions…Discover courageous people in history, including astronauts, scientists, and Biblical figures…[and] Find comfort and peace in knowing that God made you on purpose and for a purpose.”
