Dennis Quaid Talks Faith, New Album At Greg Laurie’s Church

By Movieguide® Contributor

Movieguide® Award nominee Dennis Quaid recently shared his testimony and played a few of his songs from his new album, “Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners,” at Pastor Greg Laurie’s church.

Quaid told the Harvest Congregation the story behind the first song he performed, “On My Way to Heaven.”

“I was always a Christian, grew up in the Baptist church, but this was really the beginning of my personal relationship with Jesus, which started after that,” he began. “Up until then, I’d been trying to do it my way all my life, and that didn’t work out so well.”

“I wrote it for my mother after I got out of rehab, what I called ‘cocaine school’ back in 1990, to let her know that I was ok,” he added.

Movieguide® previously reported on the actor’s addiction and recovery:

“I was in a band,” he added, “and we got a record gig… They broke up the night they got it, and they broke up because of me, because I was not reliable.”

“I remember going home and having kind of a white light experience that I saw myself either dead or in jail or losing everything I had, and I didn’t want that,” he recalled.

Laurie, the inspiration for the hit movie JESUS REVOLUTION, asked Quaid about his journey of faith and what inspired him to write the album.

“That’s the thing about being a Christian,” Quaid said. “Jesus is there, and you really have a personal relationship with him, which took me a long time to actually figure out.” Jesus took our sin on him, and “it’s like a clean slate that you start from that moment,” the actor explained.

“I think that’s what Christianity has got going for it compared to the other great religions of the world is that it’s a personal relationship with God,” Quaid said.

Laurie praised Quaid for his boldness to speak the Gospel in a typically godless place like Hollywood.

Quaid said he had to get past “embarrassment” and the fact that he offends people because of his faith, explaining, “I am who I am and…Jesus told us to go out and spread this out, you know. It’s called ‘the good news.’”

Movieguide® recently reported on Quaid:

Dennis Quaid is opening up about the process of making his new album “Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners” and why he prefers Nashville over Hollywood.

“A lot of people are embarrassed to talk about their faith,” Quaid told Variety. “They think it’s some kind of Boy Scout thing, where you’ve got to follow the rules. But I talk to God a lot, every day. I question everything I do. I believe it’s about keeping trying. It’s about self-examination and throwing your ego out the door.”

… The actor elaborated on how his Baptist upbringing influenced him in an interview with People.

“I grew up at the Baptist church; I love the hymns that I remember from being a kid,” Quaid shared. “The songs [on ‘Fallen’] are self-reflective and self-examining, not churchy. All of us have a relationship with God, whether you’re a Christian or not.”
