Kevin Quinn Says Telling God ‘I’m Struggling’ Inspired New Single

Christian artist Kevin Quinn is opening up about the inspiration behind his new single, “I’m Not There Yet.”

“I wrote it because I was going through a period of my faith where I was losing — I hate to say it, but I was kind of losing my faith after my battle with mental health and some of the stuff I went through in 2022,” he said in an interview with Christian Headlines. “I was just really struggling with it, and that’s why ‘I’m Not There Yet’ kind of takes this sort of melancholy vibe and is more of a ballad and more introspective.”

The singer and actor called it “the most vulnerable song on the project,” explaining that it’s about the ups and downs of his relationship with God.

“I feel like…in my own experience with my relationship with God and my faith, it’s like, I love praying about my blessings and being grateful about what’s happening in my life, but at the same time, I feel comfortable enough with Him that I can pray and be disappointed or upset with Him,” Quinn said. “Not in a bitter or resentful way, but just in a way where I’m expressing to Him that I’m struggling. I feel like in those moments, that’s when we want to pray the most.”

“I’m Not There Yet” will be part of his upcoming EP, Real Me.

“I finally felt, after a long time, that after [struggling with my mental health], I had something really profound and impactful to say,” he told American Songwriter. “And I needed to get that out in the music. That’s what Real Me is about. It’s a lot of that journey I went through with the mental health.”

Quinn spoke more about the inspiration behind the EP on Instagram.

“My upcoming EP is all about my recent journey with my mental health among other major life changes,” he wrote. “I am so excited to share more about this with you in the coming months and I hope some of my experiences can be beneficial to you all on your own journeys in whatever you may be facing.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Quinn’s musical career:

Kevin Quinn, the male lead in the Netflix musical A WEEK AWAY, released a new single and music video meant to point people to the Lord.

“What a blessing that I even get to make music about Jesus according to God’s plan, That’s awesome,” Quinn told The Christian Post about his latest track, “Wildfire.”

Quinn previously opened up about his faith with Movieguide®’s Evy Carroll.

“Faith is a very important part of my life, if not the most important part of my life,” Quinn said. “But it wasn’t always that way. And there was a struggle, really, in my early 20s, where I had kind of shunned the idea of faith. And it sounds so cliche, but you know, with the timing A WEEK AWAY and the stuff that I was dealing with personally, God really did bring this project at the perfect time, and it was a complete reintroduction to my own faith. Since then, in retrospect, as I look back on this project, I just think it’s — I don’t believe in coincidences, not anymore at least — and it was all too coincidental that this project had come into my life when it did.”
