DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Resumes Production After ‘Major Creative Overhaul’

By Movieguide® Contributor

DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN is set to resume production after halting for the writers’ and actors’ strikes, as well as some major changes in the writers’ room.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that production on the show will begin this month, with Charlie Cox reprising his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Vincent D’Onofrio and Jon Bernthal will also be returning as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin and The Punisher, respectively, and it’s rumored Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll will return as Foggy Nelson and Karen Page.

As BORN AGAIN resumes production, they have also made some personnel changes.

“Philip Silvera, who acted as stunt and fight coordinator on the Netflix version of Daredevil that ran in the mid-2010s, has returned to the fold to act as stunt coordinator and second unit director for the new series,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote. “His hiring is the latest example of the retooling BORN AGAIN underwent as it was changed from a legal procedural to something that aims to harken back to the gritty and violent tone of that first well-regarded series. It also reaffirms the show’s focus on more street-level heroics and less on heavy (and costly) visual effects.”

In October of 2023, it was reported that DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN would be undergoing “a major creative overhaul,” according to Variety, which also reported that head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman had been let go.

D’Onofrio spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the changes, including having THE PUNISHER writer Dario Scardapane brought on as the showrunner and the addition of MOON KNIGHT and LOKI directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.

“During our restart of all the creative on DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now,’” the actor explained. “So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original DAREDEVIL, and that’s a great thing.”

D’Onofrio explained, “It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons. So we now get to start this BORN AGAIN situation with all of that history behind us and the outcome of all that history. So we’re all talking about DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN in those terms now.”

Movieguide® nominated DAREDEVIL Season 3 episode, “A New Napkin,” for multiple Movieguide® Awards. Part of the review reads:

The episode only becomes better when he also chooses to forgive those who wronged him, including his mother, the nun, who lied to him all these years about the true nature of their relationship. Because of his Christian faith, Matt was able to become a man without fear, and because of his faith again, he’s now able to forgive. The episode’s Christian, redemptive dialogue is some of the year’s best TV dialogue. It contains strong positive Christian messages promoting forgiveness, seeing God’s Plan and Providence in our lives however chaotic they may appear to be, redemption, and repentance.

Hopefully, the new series will follow suit. Movieguide® wrote of DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, “The title, itself, could be intriguing to media-wise viewers who know that Murdock often wrestles with his Catholic faith. In the Bible, the term ‘born again,’ is what Jesus told the rich young ruler must happen in order for him to inherit the Kingdom of God.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the creative changes on DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN:

Marvel and Disney+ are looking to change up DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s creative direction.

Variety confirmed that head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman have “parted ways” with the streaming platform and that Disney+ is on the hunt for new writers to “revamp” the existing material.

“With less than half of the series’ 18-episode order shot prior to the beginning of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel has also released the directors for the remaining episodes of the season,” Variety continued. “Some elements of the already shot material will be used going forward, but Marvel is looking to take the show in a new creative direction.”

It’s unknown why Ord and Corman were let go, but The Hollywood Reporter said sources close to the production claim the former head writers delivered “a legal procedural that did not resemble the Netflix version, known for its action and violence.”

They continued, “Cox didn’t even show up in costume until the fourth episode. Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show.”
