YouTuber MrBeast Nears $100 Million Content Deal with Prime Video

By Movieguide® Contributor

Massive YouTuber MrBeast and Amazon Prime Video are in talks to finalize a $100 million reality competition deal.

Though no details are known about what the show would entail, it would likely follow the format of MrBeast’s YouTube channel, which has risen to the top of the platform due to its wild challenges and large cash prizes.

Jimmy Donaldson, who runs the MrBeast channel, has garnered over 233 million subscribers on his main YouTube channel, along with roughly 100 million more across his other tangential channels. He is the website’s highest-paid creator, earning more than double that of second place.

Some of Donaldson’s most popular videos include “$465,000 Squid Game in Real Life,” which has over 564 million views, “Last to Leave the Circle Wins $500,000,” which has roughly 400 million views, and “I Spent 50 Hours in Solitary Confinement” with over 300 million views.

While part of the MrBeast brand is Donaldson attempting difficult challenges that can last for weeks at a time, the deal with Prime Video appears to focus on the other half of the brand, which is creating competitions for others to participate in for life-changing amounts of money.

On top of his massive YouTube channel, Donaldson has multiple business ventures, including a chocolate brand, a fast-food chain and numerous philanthropic efforts.

Though an official deal between Donaldson and Prime Video has to be signed, it seems likely that the two parties will find a way to come together for this show.

Prime Video has been making major moves in the entertainment world recently; in January alone, it revealed a partnership with Jon Erwin to bring a faith-based project to life and a partnership with the Global Esports Federation to bring gaming to a mainstream audience.

A partnership with Donaldson would fit in with these other ventures as the company attempts to serve overlooked audiences. Furthermore, with the introduction of ads on the site, Prime Video has more incentive than ever to bring eyes to the platform.

Movieguide® previously reported:

While many streaming services have introduced ads onto their site in the past year, Prime Video’s upcoming switch is markedly different and could forever change the entertainment landscape.

On Jan. 29, Prime Video will start to show ads with its service, with Prime users having the option to remove them for an additional $3 per month. This introduction will turn Prime Video into the world’s largest ad-supported streaming service, netting billions in revenue for the tech giant.

The introduction of an ad tier is not a new concept. Multiple streaming sites executed this shift with a high level of success. Ads have arguably saved the streaming industry by allowing sites to quickly and reliably generate the additional income needed to become profitable.

Amazon’s switch to ads, however, will be notably different as current subscribers will be enrolled in the ad tier automatically rather than the ad tier becoming an option at a lower price point. Because of this subtle difference, Amazon executives believe few people will choose the ad-free level, even though it only costs $3 more.
