How Actress Calista Flockhart Prioritized Her Family Over Her Career

Calista Flockhart is thankful she had the opportunity to put her acting career on hold and focus on raising her adopted son Liam.

“I felt very grateful that I had a choice so I made a choice to walk away and I don’t regret it at all,” Flockhart told Drew Barrymore. “I was 99 percent a stay-at-home mom.”

Flockhart adopted Liam – who is now 22 – in 2001, less than a year before she met Harrison Ford – who is now her husband – at the 2002 Golden Globes. The two wed in 2010 and Ford adopted Liam as his son later that year.

“[Flockhart is] the best [mother] in the world,” Ford said in 2008. “She’s a mother by choice – she adopted Liam before we met, as a single parent, which is an awesome responsibility to take. She’s devoted herself to Liam and has done a really wonderful job raising him. I’m happy to now have a part of the job.”

Ford was also thankful to become a father figure for another child. He had four grown children when he began dating Flockhart and Liam came into his life.

“She’s brought a child back into my home,” Ford said. “My youngest, other than Liam, is 17. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be part of a child’s growing up, which is always an endless springtime. You see the blossoming and the growing and the nurturing and the payoff.”

After a long hiatus to raise her son, Flockhart has now returned to acting as Liam has gone off to college. Her most recent role on FEUD: CAPOTE VS. THE SWANS documents the legendary feud of the 1980s New York elites.

Movieguide® previously reported on actors putting family over their career:

Mark Wahlberg is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but he recently shared that he’s been thinking about stepping away from the spotlight.

When asked about when he might retire from acting, Wahlberg said, “Sooner rather than later, probably.”

The main reason he’s considering retirement? His children. Wahlberg said that being away from his kids for long stretches of time is hard on him.

“[A project’s] gotta be something special to really bring me, you know, to leave home, to leave those guys behind,” Wahlberg said. “Because it’s the biggest sacrifice in the making for sure.”
