Former NFL star Andrew East doesn’t want his wife to change her body — he loves her just the way she is.

In a recent podcast where his wife, Olympian Shawn Johnson East, revealed that she tried lip filler years ago, East shared how he feels about it.

“I’m so anti-lip filler…I think, Shawn, you were fearfully and wonderfully made. Don’t freaking touch it!” he said.

“You know what? You’ve gotten more beautiful with age,” he told her. “So why are you trying to preserve some younger iteration or false construct? That’s a freaking dime piece right there!”

He explained that he has a problem with the “principle” of it. If you look in the mirror and decide you don’t like how you look enough to permanently or semi-permanently change it, then you’re not appreciating how God made you.

People in the comments appreciated East’s passion about the subject.

“I actually really needed this,” one person wrote. “Why am I trying to preserve a younger, pre-wonderful amazing children version of me??

Another woman commented, “So refreshing to hear this perspective from a man.”

The couple share about a lot of things related to love and marriage on their podcast, “Couple Things.”

One of Shawn’s favorite marriage tips is something she learned from He Knows Your Name Ministry founders Steve and Linda Znachko.

“They basically said whenever you have an argument, if you’re both on the same page in understanding that you’re going to be married no matter what, with every argument you know how it’s going to end,” Johnson explained. “It changes the perspective, so you don’t feel like something’s on the line.”

In a podcast where they talked about marriage struggles, Shawn said, “It matters to the storyline of where you are and how to support each other in a marriage to find fulfillment and to find joy. A byproduct of that is happiness.”

“So, though the goal of marriage is not to just always be happy because you’re going to go through it, I do think a goal of a marriage is to see your spouse where they are in any given moment so that you can help them get back.”

She also acknowledged that it’s important to give recognition to emotions, even if they are fleeting.

“You think in the moment my sadness doesn’t matter because it’s fleeting,” she said. “It does matter because if you aren’t actively acknowledging it and working as a couple and as a marriage to get back to joy, to get back to happiness, then the rumination and the issues will always be there, so then you won’t find joy and fulfillment.”

The Easts release a new podcast episode every Wednesday and interview guests twice a month.
