Worship artist TAYA (Taya Gaukrodger) opened up about a devastating break-up that resulted in her leading worship from a “place of bitterness.”

“I’d been dating someone, and it ended badly, and it didn’t involve me in why it ended and all that,” Gaukrodger said on TBN’s BETTER TOGETHER show. “I remember just being devastated, and it involved somebody else, and I have to be honest, like I’m leading worship, talking about the goodness of God and His faithfulness. And this person walks in, and they walk to the front, and in my head, I’m just gonna be honest, I’m thinking I could jump off this little elevated platform, and I could — this is terrible — but I could kick her in the teeth.”

But God reminded her that revenge isn’t His way for His followers.

“And the next words that came out of my mouth as I am leading was ‘My judge and my defender.’ And I was like, great. So, I’m not meant to be leading from a place of bitterness,” she reflected. “I’m actually to forgive this person, even if they never apologize, and you defend me, and you defend that person. You judge me and you judge her, and you see everything, and I am to trust in you completely.”

She helps her fans remember who God is through her newest album The Reminder.

“Jesus, You are The Word made flesh and You dwelt amongst the neighbourhood,” Gaukrodger wrote of the album on Instagram. “You know all that we will go through, and Your words ring true through it all.”

“I pray this record is a testament to You,” she added. “Like an altar built in the desert for us sojourners, may these songs help us remember what You have done on this journey home. May they help us thank You for Your unyielding and unchanging faithfulness, and may they become sustenance for the days ahead.”

“My ultimate prayer is that ‘The Reminder,’ would cause you to look again, and consecrate,” Gaukrodger concluded. “That you would see God’s care for you and cause you to trust that He knows what you need. He has spoken the words that will sustain you no matter where The Way goes, He sees you and Jesus is the One faithfully leading each of us through.”

Whether leading worship or writing new music, Gaukrodger knows that God’s will for her is to lead people “to the presence of God.”

“Don’t think for a second that worship leading is your moment to shine or preach, especially when you are taking ‘the gap,'” she advised other worship leaders via Gospel Centric. “If it adds to the service and allows you to arrest the atmosphere, then do it; but if it takes away from Jesus and what your primary purpose is, leave it out.”

Serving God by leading worship is an incredible calling, and Gaukrodger continues to honor Him through her talents.
