Donnie Wahlberg just confirmed that some of his BLUE BLOODS costars will make an appearance in spinoff BOSTON BLUE.
“There were zero [BLUE BLOODS] castmates originally in the [BOSTON BLUE] pilot; now they’re creeping in, and they’ll be coming back,” Wahlberg told Deadline during an interview at Cannes.
“In success, this could lead anywhere,” he said of BOSTON BLUE. “This could lead to another BLUE BLOODS-universe show and you know, my dream is, in success, we do a movie all together. We get BLUE BLOODS and BOSTON BLUE together and do a feature film. But yes, we want to incorporate [both] worlds as much as possible.”
Though Wahlberg and his costars fought hard, BLUE BLOODS’ series finale aired last December after 14 seasons, much to the cast’s and fans’ disappointment.

“Nobody fought harder than me to keep that show on TV,” Wahlberg said before adding, “but this show has the opportunity to keep that legacy. BOSTON BLUE is the way to do that. We have characters from BLUE BLOODS and we’re answering questions that have never been answered before.”
BOSTON BLUE follows Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan to the Boston PD. He gets “paired with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), part of a law enforcement family comprised of District Attorney Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), Police Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), rookie cop Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner) and Rev. Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson). Reagan hopes to reconnect with his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), in Boston.”
The pilot debuts this Friday, Oct. 17, and Wahlberg dropped a few hints about what fans can expect from the first episode.

Should BLUE BLOODS be revived?
“There was a lot to get in there. There is the introduction of a new family. There’s getting Danny from New York to Boston and making sure that makes sense, and establishing new characters,” he said. “To me, one of the most critical parts of it was making a believable bond between Danny and Lena. We’re planting seeds. Over the lifetime of a show you can watch everything grow and evolve, but to make that super interesting right out of the gate, and do it in a way that sets it up going forward, was a big challenge.”
But the three things that made BLUE BLOODS such a hit aren’t going anywhere.
“You need faith, family and tradition,” the actor explained. “Just because we move to a new city, it doesn’t mean that they don’t exist there as well, although they might be different traditions and faiths and a different family. Having played Danny Reagan for 14 years, I met so many law enforcement families from around the country of all different backgrounds and faiths, and there are so many who related to the Reagans. Hopefully they will now relate to the Silver family.”
BLUE BLOODS fans can’t wait to see what BOSTON BLUE has in store.
