In many of her podcast episodes Sadie Robertson Huff asks her guests for their best piece of advice, and Ben and Erin Napier recently had the chance to share their answers.

“Do the best you can. Don’t worry about it,” Ben said. “It is my go-to because my dad was a preacher and they were in this country church for a while and there was this guy there who was born with a speech impediment. He was an older man. He was born with a speech impediment and because of the time and the place that he was born and grew up, his family was like, ‘Oh well. He’s handicapped. He’s not going to school. He’s gonna work on the farm, or whatever…’ He had a lot of challenges but he had a great outlook on life, and it was do the best you can. Don’t worry about it.”

This s powerful advice, especially for the average American who does so much to put their fate in their hands. However, the Bible teaches us to trust in the Lord’s providence; although we should work hard, we shouldn’t worry or fret about every small detail of the future.

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the bird of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:25-27.

Erin’s advice, meanwhile, focuses on surrounding yourself with good people who will build you up, rather than people who will lead you astray.

“My friend Lisa has really exceptional kids… they would sit around the dinner table and talk about their five people, the five friends in your life who are influencing you, are making you who you are,” Erin explained. “So, what are those qualities of those five friends and let’s talk about it. And she learned that talking about it regularly helped her kids weed out friendships that were not good with people who were not shaping them into the person they wanted to be. And so, I think that’s great advice.”

Studies have shown that people tend to become most like their five closest friends. Meanwhile, the New Testament often talks about how a few bad people can corrupt, and Paul and the other writers encourage Christians to weed out the bad people among them.

“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character,’” Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:33, adding in Galatians 5:9, “‘A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.’”

Erin’s advice is a wonderful way to live out this principle and ensure that you have good people surrounding you.

While they are in completely different fields, the pieces of advice from Ben and Erin Napier are powerful, and could both completely transform a person’s life. Even better, they are Biblically rooted and are sound wisdom that if followed will not lead a person astray.
