Get ready for another real-life story of faith and music with I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2!

“I CAN ONLY IMAGINE was such a defining moment seven years ago. I never dreamed there was more story to tell — until we heard the story behind MercyMe’s hit ‘Even If,’” director Andrew Erwin said in a statement.

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 follows MercyMe’s Bart Millard (John Michael Finley), who is living the dream onstage, but struggling to keep his personal and family life together. When newcomer Tim Timmons (Milo Ventimiglia) joins the band, he and Millard strike up a friendship.

However, when Millard discovers Timmons has secrets and past hardships of his own, he is forced to face his own past and decide what truly matters to him — fame, or family?

“Learning how Tim Timmons and Bart Millard co-wrote [‘Even If’] out of deep lived-faith moved us to tears; the honesty and hope woven through each of their journeys is undeniable. Brent and I knew immediately that I CAN ONLY IMAGINE truly deserved a sequel,” Erwin continued.

Brent McCorkle, the movie’s writer and co-director, added, “Returning to the world of IMAGINE has been a deeply personal and profoundly moving journey — for me and for so many who helped bring this uplifting story to life. Its themes of finding gratitude in our grief and discovering beauty that rises from ashes feel more relevant now than ever.”

“Watching this chapter of Bart and Tim’s story unfold for the big screen has been an honor. I can’t wait for audiences everywhere to experience it this February,” he concluded.

Erwin praised both Finley and Ventimiglia for their performances in separate Instagram posts, calling the former “raw, vulnerable, humble, strong,” adding, “It took courage and I can’t wait to show people what we created!”

He also shouted out Ventimiglia, writing, “I’ve never met an actor that wears his star power as lightly or with as much integrity as Milo Ventimiglia. This guy is the real deal in every way.”

Ventimiglia, known for his roles on GILMORE GIRLS and THIS IS US, talked to People about his preparations for the role, including spending time with Timmons.

“Tim and I spent a ton of time [together], and he was on set every day,” he said. “The nice part about the whole filming experience was I met now one of my very good friends for the rest of my life.”

The actor also shared his hopes for what audiences take away from I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2, like “not being so weighed down [by] all the struggles that we have in life,” but instead focusing on “finding goodness, finding compassion, finding friendship and love, and being able to give those things.”

“I hope a film like this can show that to people, and they can take that and put that practice into their own lives,” Ventimiglia concluded.

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 hits theaters February 20.
