“Confessions Of A Shopaholic” novelist Sophie Kinsella died following a battle with brain cancer. She was 55 years old.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy),” a post on Kinsella’s Instagram account announced. “She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy.”
The caption continued, “We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed – to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received. She will be missed so much our hearts are breaking.”

The author shared her cancer diagnosis in 2024 in a message posted to her website.
“I’ve wanted for a long time to share with you a health update and I’ve been waiting for the strength to do so,” Kinsella wrote. “At the end of 2022 I was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a form of aggressive brain cancer. I did not share this before because I wanted to make sure that my children were able to hear and process the news in privacy and adapt to our ‘new normal.’”
She continued, “To everyone who is suffering from cancer in any form I send love and best wishes, as well as to those who support them. It can feel very lonely and scary to have a tough diagnosis, and the support and care of those around you means more than words can say.”
Kinsella — real name: Madeleine Wickham — was dubbed “the queen of romantic comedy,” writing dozens of books for both adults and children.
Her most popular was the “Confessions Of A Shopaholic” series, which was later made into a movie. Movieguide® even named CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC one of “The Ten Best 2009 Movies for Mature Audiences.”
“I remember looking around me and thinking… “We all shop… We talk about it. We do it. We rejoice in it. We make bad decisions. Why hasn’t anybody written about this?” Kinsella said in a 2019 interview about the inspiration for the book.
Fans of Kinsella’s books and the movie inspired by one of her most popular works are mourning the loss of the author, and sending love to her friends and family.
