Comedian Nate Bargatze may work in the entertainment industry, but he decided Los Angeles wasn’t the best place to raise his family.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 46-year-old shared that he and his wife, Laura, chose to move back to Nashville so their 13-year-old daughter Harper could grow up in a more normal, down-to-earth environment.

“We live in a great neighborhood. We’re in a cul-de-sac. No one who’s really in entertainment [lives] there. It’s people who have regular jobs, our friends,” he said.

The family made the move nearly 10 years ago, and they don’t regret it.

“So everything that she is around now…she’s not around this,” Bargatze continued, referring to his showbiz career. “She knows I do it and I have her introduce me in my specials. So she sees sights of it, but overall, she’s going to school [and living a normal life].”

On behalf of himself and his wife, Bargatze said, “I wanted her to not be around all of this.”

If his daughter ever decided she wanted to be part of the entertainment industry, though, he said, “…it’s on her own. It’s her call.”

He keeps his family life pretty private.

“I want her to be able to trust that she can come to me as her father, which is the most important thing, and say stuff to me and not think anything she says I’m going to go tell the whole world,” he previously told PEOPLE of his relationship with Harper, who was born in 2012.

Bargatze emphasized the importance of keeping his daughter’s life out of the spotlight.

“I haven’t talked about her a ton outside of when she was a baby because…I want her to be her own person,” he said.

While rumors circulated last year that Bargatze was considering leaving stand up behind, he wanted to set the record straight.

“So I’ve been there, and I’ve done that,” he said. “I’m not quitting stand-up right now. I got this [current] tour, we’re doing another tour, but there’s gonna be a point where it’s gonna get hard to travel on the road as we’re creating so much stuff and making these movies.”

He added, “I just like creating things that I really want to involve an audience.”

Bargatze’s decision shows that success doesn’t have to come at the cost of family life. By moving to Nashville, he created a balance between his growing comedy career and giving his daughter a normal, stable childhood. This is a reminder of the importance of prioritizing family no matter how successful you might be.
