Andy Serkis has always been known for pushing boundaries in the movie industry, but with his latest adaptation of George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM, he’s taken a bold step into political storytelling.
“Orwell’s story is as relevant now as ever and I wasn’t interested in softening his message,” Serkis, the Emmy-winning director, said in an interview with USA Today.
This new version of ANIMAL FARM comes to screens this weekend, renewing the iconic story of farm animals rebelling against their human farmer in what initially seems to be a quest for equality. However, power struggles quickly ensue, echoing Orwell’s original themes of corruption and betrayal.
Serkis uses contemporary animation to capture the starkness of these ideas, blending classic storytelling with modern drama.
“I wanted the movie to provoke thought and reflection,” Serkis explained to Digital Journal, stressing the need to challenge audiences with uncomfortable truths. This project marks one of Serkis’ most ambitious ventures yet, weaving present-day political and ideological nuances with Orwell’s allegorical tale.
Movieguide®’s review of the movie points out, “Serkis’ adaptation is no subtle commentary—it’s an outright condemnation of Marxism.” The story remains faithful to Orwell’s sharp vision, warning viewers about the dangers of totalitarian regimes disguised as utopian societies.
The review adds, “The movie’s strong anti-Marxist message holds up the mirror to today’s world, daring viewers to examine authority and power through a critical lens.”
During a candid discussion with Polygon, Serkis defended his directorial approach, saying, “Telling hard truths is what art should do. We’re not here to make people comfortable, we’re here to make them think.”
The movie’s animation style is another element that sets it apart.
Serkis told Digital Journal, “Animation has given us the freedom to amplify the allegory. It’s allowed us to create a world that’s stark, stylized, and deeply engaging.”
The result is a visual landscape that matches the bleak undertones of the narrative.
ANIMAL FARM does not shy away from difficult subject matter. It’s a movie that aims to provoke conversation and reflection, rather than provide escapist entertainment. Serkis’ dedication to preserving Orwell’s cautionary tale is evident in every scene, making this adaptation a significant, albeit divisive, piece of cinema.
Parents should be mindful that, despite its animated format, this movie is not intended for small children. The content is sophisticated and intense, delving deep into themes of power, betrayal and moral ambiguity that may not be suitable for younger audiences.
