Netflix is purportedly at work on a prequel series to THE CROWN about the British monarchy and Queen Elizabeth’s early life.

The new series will cover from Queen Victoria’s death in 1901 through the wedding of Queen Elizabeth to Prince Philip in 1947, according to the Daily Mail.

Town and Country Mag says the show will be created under a $676 million deal between Netflix and Left Bank Pictures. Creator and showrunner Peter Morgan will return for the project. The cast will be chosen next year.

“Netflix has been locked in negotiations with the company for quite a long time about this spin-off series, but they’ve recently finally agreed to seal the deal and come to an agreement,” a source told the Daily Mail.

The project was first said to be in development in 2022, Radio Times reported.

The time period for the series is significant.

“When Queen Victoria died at the age of 81 on 22 January 1901, it took her family, court and subjects by surprise – very few had been able to contemplate the mortality of the monarch who had ruled over Britain and its empire for almost 64 years,” History Extra wrote. “Her death marked the end of the Victorian era.”

Morgan said he doesn’t want to cover periods close to modern times, as the series would become “journalistic” rather than “historical.” Covering current events leaves out opportunity for full coverage as other events usually come to light over time.

“I cannot imagine any circumstances in which I’d want to go further into the present, as it were, but at the same time, I don’t think I’m done with the subject,” said Morgan. “I might find some way of coming into it from a different way. If you go back in time, you always have that wonderful opportunity for metaphor.”

“You can find a story in the past and tell that, and it [will] actually be a story about the present, but in camouflage,” he explained. “And that, I think, might be a more elegant way forward. To move forward from where I left the show off at the moment feels too soon.”

The original production of THE CROWN was massive. Hypebeast reported across the series’ 60 episodes there were 45,816 extras and 719 distinct locations, not to mention the extras’ and cast’s elaborate wardrobes and even more elaborate props.

The original series ran for six seasons with 60 episodes. It won 24 Primetime Emmys and multiple BAFTAS and Golden Globe Awards.

Neither Netflix nor Morgan has officially confirmed the prequel is in development.
