What You Need To Know:

COUPLES RETREAT is a funny comedy about four couples, who take a week long vacation at a resort where they build “couple relationship skills.” Jason and Cynthia are on the verge of a divorce. They talk their friends into going with them to the couples retreat. Dave and Ronni take each other for granted. Lucy and Joey cheat on each other. Finally, Shane is divorced and dating a 20-year-old. When Shane’s younger girlfriend goes to “the other island” for singles, the others go to bring her back. Shane discovers his ex-wife at the singles resort looking for him. Eventually, the couples learn they must confront their problems and work them out.

COUPLES RETREAT has a charming ensemble cast that works well together. The story is sometimes predictable but makes the viewer want the couples to solve their marital woes. The movie’s main point is that marriage must be a lifelong commitment. However, it contains some minor foul language and a scene of implied sexuality between one married couple. There is also brief male nudity and a risqué scene involving some lewd yoga positions. Thus, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong or extreme caution.

Content:

(BBB, Pa, FR, LL, V, SS, N, A, M) Very strong moral worldview honors marriage with a mention of God making man in His own image, mixed with some pagan and false religious elements; 16 light obscenities and one profanity; man hits another man; string brief sexual content includes references to adultery, husband tries to cheat, implied sexual scene between married couple, “simulated” sexual position during yoga, and man’s erection appears under sheet; rear male nudity, upper male nudity, near frontal male nudity except for a strategic flower, women in very skimpy bikinis; drinking of alcohol; no smoking or illegal drugs; and, lying.

More Detail:

COUPLES RETREAT is a comedy of four couples who take a week long vacation at a resort where they build “couple relationship skills.” Jason and Cynthia, who are on the verge of a divorce, talk their friends into going with them. Dave and Ronni take each other for granted. Lucy and Joey have begun to cheat on each other. Shane is divorced and dating a 20-year-old.

Expecting a resort vacation, they instead discover that their resort involves marriage counseling sessions, yoga and other activities. Thus, the couples can no longer hide from their problems and begin to bring their marital issues into the forefront.

When Shane’s younger girlfriend goes to “the other island” for singles, the others go to get her back. There they confront each of their own troubles and begin to work out their problems. It turns out Shane’s ex-wife is there, hoping to find him.

COUPLES RETREAT has a charming ensemble cast that works well together. The story is at times a bit predictable but makes the viewer want the couples to work out their problems. Though treated with a light touch, there are many scenes that do show genuinely solid marriage counseling principles such as communicating and hearing the spouse out.

The point of the movie is that marriage is for a lifelong commitment. One character regrets marrying his high school girfriend (she was pregnant) and missing out on the “fun” of a swinging single life. Another character says she was a virgin when they married, and she needed to find out what was “out there.” Both characters discover that marriage is better than a wild, pagan lifestyle and ultimately embrace their marriage commitments.

COUPLES RETREAT contains some minor foul language and a scene of implied sexuality between one of the married couples. However, there is also upper and rear male nudity and a scene of the couples doing yoga that simulates and implies sexual positions. It’s a shame that the movie’s positive message extolling marriage is hurt by such obscene moments.
