On DVD January 21, 2020: Sadly, Way Too Many Questionable Elements

THE ADDAMS FAMILY (2019)

Quality:
***
Content:
-2 Discretion advised for adults.
While THE ADDAMS FAMILY movie may be about family, audience members may have a hard time pushing through the darkness to discern redeeming values. The melancholic humor distracts from light moral values, including honoring family and tradition. The movie also contains some pagan elements, and one scene where Morticia conducts a séance to speak with her dead parents, and rates an extreme caution.

ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP

Quality:
****
Content:
-2 Discretion advised for adults.
ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP picks up 10 years after the first horror comedy, with another wild adventure battling the undead as three friends try to find and save the youngest girl of the group after she runs away with a new boyfriend. ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP provides another round of traveling comic mayhem, combined with entertaining character interactions, a strong moral worldview mixed with some positive Christian references, but ZOMBIELAND: DOUBLE TAP also contains strong foul language and extreme violence, a casual premarital sex, and a comical reference to marijuana use.

COUNTDOWN

Quality:
**
Content:
-3 Excessive content and/or worldview problems.
COUNTDOWN is a horror thriller about a young nurse who tries to keep herself and her sister alive after a new phone app tells them they’re doomed to die in two days. COUNTDOWN goes downhill in the second half and contains lots of intense violence, foul language, some substance abuse, and strong occult elements that undercut the movie’s moral elements.

BLACK AND BLUE

Quality:
***
Content:
-3 Excessive content and/or worldview problems.
BLACK AND BLUE follows a rookie black female police officer in New Orleans who finds herself fighting for justice alongside her life after seeing a black police officer stand by while a white policeman shouts a black man down in cold blood. BLACK AND BLUE has a strong moral worldview with an emphasis on fighting for justice, truth, sacrifice, and doing the right thing, but the amount of foul language and some of the violence are excessive and ultimately unacceptable.

PAIN AND GLORY

Quality:
***
Content:
-3 Excessive content and/or worldview problems.
PAIN AND GLORY is a Spanish drama about a movie director named Salvador Mallo, who struggles with multiple medical issues as he aches not only for no more physical pain, but also the desire to direct and write movies again. PAIN AND GLORY is very artsy but falls short in giving the audience clarity of onscreen events. Also, the movie’s positive Christian references to God, prayer and forgiveness are spoiled by sexual references, homosexuality, drug use, brief excessive nudity, some foul language, and an ambivalent attitude toward monotheism.
