Fans will finally get a second SIMPSONS movie nearly 20 years after the first one hit theaters.

“Homer’s coming back for seconds,” 20th Century Studios announced on Instagram, adding in the comments, “Woohoo! THE SIMPSONS are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!”

Even though it’s been on air since December 1989, THE SIMPSONS is as popular as ever, especially now as a staple in the Disney+ lineup since the platform launched in 2019.

“Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us,” showrunner Matt Selman told Variety in June. “Not that we realized we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it.”

There are no clues where the plot for the second movie in the franchise will go, but after one successful movie and over 750 episodes, fans can be sure it will be entertaining, funny and heartwarming. The first movie, which released in 2007, was a major success, grossing $536 million at the global box office, coming in at the No. 10 movie of the year. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE walks a tightrope between hilarious, heartwarming humor full of love, kindness, forgiveness, and redemption and edgy, sometimes lightly obscene and irreverent humor. Although Ned Flanders, the most Christian character in the Simpsons universe, plays a major, positive role, the movie also contains some anti-Christian humor. Thus, MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution.

The movie is set to release on July 23, 2027, taking the spot of a untitled Marvel project that was slated to come out between AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and AVENGERS: SECRET WAR. This rollback of Marvel content comes as Disney has made an effort to slow down the franchise as not to overwhelm fans.

“There was a lot of pressure post-AVENGERS: ENDGAME on the public to feel obligated to watch absolutely everything in order to watch anything,” said Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television and animation. “Part of the rebranding was a signal to the general audience that we’re creating a lot of options, and you can follow your tastes within this brand. Some will be more comedic, some will be more dramatic, some will be animated, some will be live-action. Marvel is more than just one thing — it is actually many different genres that just happened to coexist in a single narrative.”

While the second SIMPSONS movie is still nearly two years away, it will give fans much to be excited about. Until then, they can enjoy new episodes of the show with 17 episodes releasing every season.
