Actor Rob Lowe Shares Secret to 31-Year Marriage: ‘[Sheryl] is my Best Friend’

In a recent interview, actor Rob Lowe shared that devotion and forgiveness have been key factors in 31-year-long marriage.
“It’s all about who you choose… Sheryl was and is my best friend. So if you marry for anything other than the fact that it’s your best friend, you’re at a disadvantage from the jump,” Lowe said. “‘Cause that will sustain when the other stuff ebbs and flows.”
While Lowe’s relationship has had ups and downs, like any marriage, his and his wife’s commitment to each other in the good and the bad has brought them through the tough times.
“I think the minute things go south for whatever reason it could be… many many many reasons, I think people can go, ‘Oh, I knew it. This, this is bad. This is a mistake. That marriages don’t work.’ Everybody has those dark periods,” he said.
“When they come, and they do, just like a career, everyone has periods where it’s not happenin’ like you would like it… Life is like that, it ebbs and flows… You can’t just bail on the ebbs. ‘Cause eventually it’ll turn around if you’re with the right person,” he continued.
Another key factor he cites is forgiveness.
“People say marriage takes work. I’m not sure if it takes work… But what it does take is forgiveness. And being really cognizant of what hill you’re willing to die on,” Lowe said.
“You definitely have to stay in the room,” Lowe added. “And then I think there is a sense maybe on the outside when one looks at a long marriage and goes ‘Oh, it’s been – they’re blessed.’ True. ‘And it’s a perfect marriage.’ There’s nothing that’s perfect.”
The couple celebrated 31 years together last July. “Happy 31st Anniversary, baby. Your love has made my world,” he said on Instagram. “You are as beautiful, knowledgeable, fascinating, kind, and hilarious as you were so many glorious years ago. Partners in love for life!!
They have had two sons together, Matthew, 29, and John Owen, 28.

Actor Rob Lowe shared that he has reached a “whole other level of parenting” now that he’s dad to adult children.
Lowe has been married to makeup artist Sheryl Berkoff since 1991. The couple share two sons, Matthew, 30, and John, 28.
“They finish college and now you’re at a whole other level of parenting,” Lowe laughed. “Like, okay, it’s the real world. Go to work, get a job, what’s that going to look like?”
Apparently, “the real world” looks like Lowe getting to collaborate with his sons. He and John are working together on Netflix’s UNSTABLE. The father and son duo serve as co-creators and executive producers, as well as stars of the show.
“He’s already writing season two,” Lowe said of the show, which was inspired by his relationship with John.
“He loves trolling me on social media. And we decided that people were so interested in it, how can we explore this maybe as a show?” the actor explained. “So we’ve come up with, I think, a really funny take on a benevolent narcissist father in the spotlight, who means very well.”
So, what is it like for the father and son to work together?
“You know what’s really weird, is I forget he’s my son when we’re shooting. Unless we’re doing scenes where we’re playing father and son,” Lowe laughed. “But making the show, what’s amazing for me and was a revelation, was I feel like I’m working with a peer. And he’s also the only partner I could have had making this.”
“There’s nobody else who I could do it with because no one else would understand,” he concluded.
