Angel Studios announced it will release its upcoming movie I WAS A STRANGER, which follows a group of people struggling to survive in war-torn Syria, to theaters this December.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share I WAS A STRANGER with a broader audience through Angel,” said writer and director Brandt Andersen in a press release. “This story has resonated with viewers all over the world and I believe the themes of empathy and courage are more important than ever.”
The movie, which was originally called THE STRANGER’S CASE, was inspired by Brandt’s Oscar short-listed 23 minute movie, REFUGEE, which has earned numerous awards across the 40 film festivals it has played at.

“Set against the backdrop of the Syrian Civil War, the film follows a pediatric surgeon, Amira (Yasmine Al Massri), and her daughter, whose lives intertwine with five families across four continents in a chain reaction of tragedy, resilience, and hope,” a synopsis of the movie reads.
I WAS A STRANGER will come to select theaters starting Dec. 31, 2025 before enjoying a wide opening on Jan. 9, 2026. The movie comes amidst a strong slate of Angel Studios projects which includes YOUNG WASHINGTON, a star-studded movie about our nation’s first president.
“I’ve dreamed of telling the powerful origin story of George Washington for nearly a decade,” said Jon Erwin, who will serve as a producer on the project. “It’s a story of a true pioneer, which makes it the perfect project to partner on with the pioneers at Angel and their world-class distribution networks. YOUNG WASHINGTON isn’t just a film — it’s a celebration of the American spirit and the miracle of the forging of our nation.”
The stars acting in the movie include Sir Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis and Joel Smallbone.
Angel Studios also recently took a major step as it listed as a public company on the New York Stock Exchange as a way to fundraise even more projects while keeping itself free from having to follow the whims of only a couple major donors.
“This marks a huge milestone for Angel and our 1.5 million-plus Guild members worldwide,” said Neal Harmon, co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Angel after the company was listed. “Our model and technology are leading a movement to reshape entertainment, empowering audiences as virtual co-producers. The Guild selects stories that amplify light and timeless values—curating a powerful library through greenlighting films and shows for theaters, TV, or Angel streaming—and we’re just getting started.”
All of the projects in the works at Angel Studios are extremely exciting, and it is amazing to see how the company continues to bring uplifting, morally sound content to audiences world wide.
