Are These Viral TikTok Trends a Hit or a Miss?

For those who like to live life on the edge, testing out the recent viral “airport theory” trend on TikTok might be for you.
The new internet craze has people show up to their flights 15 to 20 minutes before their departure time, foregoing the recommended two-hour arrival time for domestic flights and three-hour arrival time for international flights.
“[I]t is perhaps perfect for those thrill seekers who hate waiting around and getting overstimulated in a busy airport who would rather do this and risk potentially missing their flight,” Isabella Boneham wrote in National World.
But is the airport theory possible? For TikToker and author of How to Win at Travel Brian Kelly (@briankellytravel), he was able to make it to his terminal under the 20-minute mark, though it is a theory he doesn’t recommend for every traveler to attempt to prove.
“So is airport theory possible, absolutely, but it’s not a strategy I would rely on. But if you’re the Points Guy clearly you’re going to make it work,” Kelly said in a TikTok video as he waited for his flight that ended up delayed.
The Points Guy is a reference to his social media handle where he shares money saving and travel tips.
Another TikToker Jenny Kurtz (@Jenny_Kurtzz) said she does not recommend trying the airport theory at all as she missed her plane in her attempt to meet the challenge.
“For those of you thinking about testing out the airport theory…don’t do it. Missed my flight,” Kurtz posted, showing of a video of her gate’s screen reading “Flight Closed,” followed by a shot of presumably her plane taking off.
Another TikTok trend that might be less stressful — some say might even reduces stress — is the viral “anxiety dance” trend. The trend has people recreating the scene from THE FRESH PRINCE OF BELAIR where Will Smith walks in on cousin Ashley, played by Tatyana Ali, dancing with Walkman headphones on, oblivious that he’s there. Smith then mimics her dance moves, before she finally notices him.
The videos are set to the rapper Doechii’s song “Anxiety.” Smith and Ali even joined in on the trend, this time with Doechii dancing along with them.
“Waited 35 years for this dance to trend,” the TikTok post captioned, that has so far garnered over 32 million likes.
Creative expression, such as dance, is a way to help with anxiety, says psychotherapist Niro Feliciano.
“People often feel paralyzed by anxiety and its effects, and the dance shows that we are not,” Feliciano told TODAY.com. “It gives us something to do — and even dance in and of itself can help to overcome some of the symptoms.”
The “anxiety dance” trend definitely seems more calming than the risk of a missed flight.
