Candace Cameron Bure Grateful ‘We Didn’t Have Social Media’ Growing Up
By Movieguide® Contributor
Candace Cameron Bure joined Andrew Erwin on “The Storytellers” podcast, where she shared what it was like to grow up in Hollywood and her desire to see faith in the industry.
“We just kind of fell into it,” she said of becoming an actress at 5. “I guess my brother and I had enough natural talent for some commercials, or we were cute enough at the time, whatever that was, that we started working immediately.”
When asked what was challenging about growing up in front of the camera, she shared, “Just going through puberty in front of millions of people… and I’m really grateful that at the time we didn’t have social media that we have now…I’m really grateful for that.”
As her career has grown, Bure now wants to use her platform to promote Christian media in Hollywood. However, making faith-based entertainment hasn’t been easy.
“I always look at some of those t-shirts…back in the day in the ’80s, they were so popular, to have whatever popular logo it was, whether it was ‘Nike- Just Do It’ or McDonalds or Burger King…and then have the Christian version of it, so it looked like the same logo but it’s going to say something about Jesus. I always thought to myself, ‘Why are we just copycats at a lesser version’? That’s how those t-shirts made me feel,” Bure shared.
“And then that’s how I felt the programming for faith entertainment was. We are the lesser version of the good things that are out there. If we are people that are carried by God Almighty Himself, we are people that are kingdom-minded, why do we not do the best of the best of the best? I think we’ve needed belief, we’ve needed funds and we’ve needed the people to come out for it,” she said.
Candace explained that audiences have become more supportive of Christian content in recent years.
“So that’s what I’ve seen happen, and I’m so happy that it has,” she added.
She’s putting her words into practice through the upcoming movie UNSUNG HERO. Bure plays Kay Albright, and Erwin is an executive producer.
The movie, which releases on April 26, follows the Smallbone family of for KING + COUNTRY fame.
A summary reads:
When David Smallbone’s successful music company collapses, he moves his family from Down Under to the States, searching for a brighter future. With nothing more than their six children, suitcases, and their love of music, David (For King & Country’s Joel Smallbone) and his pregnant wife Helen (Daisy Betts) set out to rebuild their lives. Based on a remarkable true story, Helen’s faith stands against all odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. With their own dreams on hold, David and Helen begin to realize the musical prowess in their children, who would go on to become two of the most successful acts in Inspirational Music history: five-time Grammy Award-winning artists For King & Country and Rebecca St. James.
“It dawned on us about 4 years ago that this story of immigrating from Australia to America & all the adventures & challenges we’ve walked through in between was a story that needed to be told–so we made a movie,” Luke Smallbone wrote on Instagram.
“It’s our hope that this story encourages you & your family as working on this project & reflecting has encouraged ours. Looking forward to sharing it with you next year,” he added.

“Joel, 39, stars in the movie as his own father David Smallbone, who moves to Nashville in 1991 with his seven children and wife [Helen] (Daisy Betts). As the family struggles to establish themselves in a new country, their daughter Rebecca St. James begins receiving attention for her impressive singing ability,” PEOPLE reported.
The trailer shows the family’s struggles to fit into their new life in America, both culturally and financially. Amid the struggles, David and Helen begin to notice their kids’ talents.
The Hollywood Reporter said, “The movie also follows the family’s mother, Helen Smallbone (Daisy Betts) as she uses her faith to hold the family of nine together by turning struggles into an adventure for her children. The title for the film comes from a For King + Country song of the same name that was dedicated to the parents of Joel and Luke Smallbone.”
