Chance The Rapper To Build Community in Latest Initiative

By Movieguide® Contributor

Chance the Rapper’s nonprofit, SocialWorks, is working to bring mental health resources to those in need in the Chicago area.

SocialWork’s mental health initiative, My State of Mind, has offered users nearly 3,000 different programs since it began in 2019.

“[The website] lets you find and filter what you need through a series of quizzes and tests,” Chance the Rapper said of My State of Mind. “But there’s a large portion of our original programs where they are geared to … military and veteran aid, real counseling, psychiatrists. It’s just a big pool and an easy way to dive through finding help.”

It’s all part of the artist’s work to build a stronger sense of community in his hometown of Chicago.

“I’ve dealt with depression, anxiety and a lot of different things,” he explained. “What helps even though it’s not simplistic is being amongst other people and creating space for your peers to be around you and see you might need help. In those spaces and experiences, those people can connect.”

Chance the Rapper continued, “I feel like that’s been my thing the past few years: building my community and collectives around common goals … and a lot of my goals do deal with equity or housing, education, civics — a lot of different things. There’s a strength in numbers.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Chance the Rapper’s strong Christian faith:

Recording artist Chance the Rapper released a new album after three years that includes a heartwarming song called “We Go High” about his wife how they maintain a godly marriage.

Chance says that he is a Christian, and his lyrics in “We Go High” reflect biblical values for marriage:

It’s true God, this union was for you God
We standin’ at the at the stoop and want to make it to the rooftop
You told us bring some people through, we tried to bring a few God
We tried to form a new bar, just tell us what to do God

Some music-listeners might be skeptical that Chance’s faith is authentic, as many of his songs contain foul language, but listeners can be grateful that some of his songs edify faith values and don’t shy away from the hard parts of the Christian walk.
