Christian Video Game Platform Empowers Parents

By Movieguide® Contributor

Brent Dusing explained why he created his video game studio TruPlay and why it is important for Christian parents to give their children video games made with the Bible in mind.

“I think as Christians we’ve done a lot of movies, we’ve done a lot of music, we have certainly done a lot of books, but given that games are so much a part of our cultural fabric, we’ve got to be right there with excellence,” Dusing told Movieguide®.

Given that the average American child spends over 50 hours on screens a week, and much of that time is spent on gaming, many of their views on the world come from what they learn from these games. Dusing saw this as an opportunity to spread Biblical teachings in a major way.

“Over 60% of Americans that are 40 years old or more believe in God, which isn’t really that bad compared to a lot of countries, but only 31% of kids [in America believe in God]. And you zoom out and you say, ‘Wait, how did that happen?’ Well, you know, I don’t think it’s right to blame the church at all. What I blame is the rest of society and culture,” Dusing said.

“You know, you’re on a screen 52 hours a week as a child in America, the average child’s at church 30 minutes…so it’s literally a 100 to one type of exposure…” he continued. “I think in our culture today, kids don’t have a lot of positive examples of where they can turn to for virtue, and so that’s what we love to try to do.”

TruPlay tackles this problem by creating a variety of games. Some are explicitly Biblical, such as “King David’s Battles,” which follows David’s story, while other games follow original characters who learn Biblical lessons throughout the game’s story.

“So they’re kind of encountering real problems that kids deal with, for example, Ava is one of our characters. Her parents are divorced and she’s getting bullied at school and she didn’t ask for those circumstances but she has to learn that her identity is not what people say she is, her identity is in who God says she is,” Dusing explained.

“The reality is that this is what kids are dealing with and so how do you deal with that constructively, how do you learn your identity isn’t in the names people call you at school. You don’t have to take on negative talk or negative talk on social media.” he continued.

“What if you learn that you don’t have to accept the lies? You can actually say no. You can fight back. You are who God made you to be,” Dusing added. “You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and you have a special purpose whatever God designed for you, and that’s a message for every child.”

Dusing and his team put out a new game and comic every month to keep the content fresh and children engaged. Those interested in TruPlay can find out more here.

TruPlay Games has created a Christian entertainment platform that shares God’s truth through video games, videos and comics to combat the current toxic media landscape.

“All of our games are built to be incredibly fun, very high quality, built by gaming professionals who worked at world-class gaming companies, but also games that reveal God’s truth,” Brent Dusing, CEO and founder of TruPlay Games, told The Christian Post.

“But at the same time, we’re dealing with issues that kids are dealing with, and we’re showing that God is there and that there is a positive way to deal with negativity that comes through,” he continued. “And that your identity and your development as a human being should be tied to God’s plan for you, not someone else’s agenda.”
