Christian Artist Decries Devil’s ‘Disguises’ in New Song
By Movieguide® Contributor
A new song from Christian artist Danny Gokey warns against the ways “the devil disguises evil.”
“I went and heard this preacher speak at a church in Atlanta, and he preached a phenomenal message,” Gokey said in a recent Instagram video. “He was talking about how the devil disguises evil, puts makeup over it, talking about Jezebel, how the culture’s mesmerized with makeup.”
He continued, “The devil never comes to us like the devil, but he comes as an angel of light, speaking smoothly, kindly, with a lot of deception. And the culture’s mesmerized. They love neat packages, but it’s only surface. And so I wrote this song, inspired by the message. It’s very confrontational, but it’s very — it’s in love.”
The song, titled “Makeup,” includes lyrics about the disguises evil can wear:
So wake up
I think the devil’s trying to play us
He’s mesmerized us with the makeup
But it’s made up
Open your eyes stop buying all the lies
If we don’t wake up
Oh, we gotta wake up
There’s a war against our souls
Wake up, oh, we gotta wake up
From the lies that we’ve been sold
“Makeup” is a track on Gokey’s latest album, Sound of Heaven.
“The phrase ‘Sound of Heaven,’ and each of the songs on this album, will mean different things to different people in different places of life, and I believe that each of these songs communicate the hopeful messages of heaven in ways that will speak to people – whatever their season of life,” Gokey shared in a statement about the project.
He continued, “My prayer is that each of these songs meets each person right where they are and helps them experience the ‘s of heaven’ in a fresh new way, in just the way they need it!”
Movieguide® previously reported on another track from Gokey’s album:
Danny Gokey is sharing the story behind one of the songs on his latest album.
“I want to share a story about a little song called ‘Only For A Moment,’” he said in a new Instagram video. “It’s on the new album called Sound Of Heaven.”
Gokey said, “I love the lyric — it says, ‘Even now, there is hope buried in the hurt // before the bloom of a rose, there’s a season in the dirt // but something beautiful is on the way // and where you are is not where you were made to stay.’”
“I love how it talks about hope,” he continued. “There is hope, even when it feels like everything is dark and gloomy and things aren’t working out. When God plants a seed, it goes in the dirt. It seems dark. The seed has to die, but it’s not the end of the situation. The seed is the beginning of the situation. You have to always keep [that] in mind — that even though you feel buried right now, you feel like life has kind of dealt you a bad hand. If something’s dying in your life, surrender to God and know that He’s going to work everything out together for your good, because God doesn’t waste any of the pain that we go through.”
Gokey concluded, “It’s only for a moment the Bible talks about that, the afflictions that we go through cannot compare to the glory that’s going to be revealed in us.”
